Chapter 8 - Daniel’s Desperate Choice

The black submachine gun felt heavy and foreign in Daniel’s trembling hands. He had spent his entire life behind computer screens, spreadsheets, and HVAC manuals, never imagining a scenario where he would hold a lethal weapon in an airport terminal. He raised the barrel, his arms shaking uncontrollably as the second masked intruder rounded the structural pillar just yards away.

"Drop it, Vance!" the intruder snarled, his voice muffled by the thick black balaclava.

Miller leaned out from behind his concrete pillar and fired a precise round that caught the intruder in the shoulder, spinning him around. The man stumbled, dropping his weapon, but managed to hit the manual emergency release lever on the side wall.

With a deafening hiss, the reinforced fire shutters began to slam downward from the ceiling, sealing off the terminal section from the rest of the airport.

"Move! Now!" Miller shouted, sprinting toward the descending metal shutters before they closed completely.

Daniel dropped the gun onto the floor, turned to Claire and Elena, and grabbed both of their hands with a desperate, crushing grip. "We have to go. If we stay here, we die."

Elena yanked her hand away, glaring at him with pure venom. "I’m not going anywhere with you, Daniel. You got us into this nightmare!"

"Elena, please!" Daniel cried, his voice cracking. "I'll explain everything on the other side. Just trust me one last time!"

Claire looked from Daniel to the closing metal shutters, then down at the blood pooling on the linoleum from the fallen operative. The choice was stark: stay in a sealed war zone with armed operatives closing in, or follow a pathological liar into the unknown underworld he had created. Survival instinct overrode marital betrayal. Claire grabbed Elena’s wrist, overriding the other woman’s protests.

"We go," Claire said firmly. "We survive first, Elena. We can destroy him later."

Together, the three of them scrambled under the descending fire shutter just as it slammed into the floor with a bone-rattling crash, sealing off the terminal lounge entirely. They tumbled onto the darkened baggage claim tarmac outside, where the heavy black van sat idling with its side door wide open.

Agent Miller was already standing by the van door, holding a small digital tablet and frantically tapping the screen. He gestured sharply with his chin.

"Get in the back. Right now," Miller ordered.

Without another word, Daniel practically shoved Claire and Elena into the darkened interior of the van before climbing in after them. The sliding door slammed shut with a heavy, vacuum-sealed thud, plunging them into near-total darkness as the vehicle accelerated hard onto the empty runway service road.

Inside the cramped back of the van, illuminated only by the faint green glow of a dashboard monitor, Claire caught her breath and looked at Daniel, whose face was illuminated by the flickering light.

"You better start talking, Daniel," Claire whispered, her voice laced with venom. "And this time, you better not leave out a single detail."

Daniel swallowed hard, wiping blood from a minor glass scratch on his forehead, as Agent Miller turned around from the front passenger seat, holding a manila folder that he tossed directly into Claire's lap.
