Chapter 2 - The Ticket Stub Discovery

The PA announcement echoed off the high glass ceilings of the terminal, jarring the tense silence. Daniel scrambled to his feet, his black sweater suddenly looking too heavy for the humid indoor air. His hands fluttered nervously near his pockets before settling on the fabric of his trousers. The woman in the white sweater—whose name had not yet been spoken—stared at Daniel with wide, trembling eyes, her chest heaving as the terrifying truth began to dawn on her as well.

"Daniel, what is she talking about?" the woman in the white sweater asked, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper. "Who is this woman?"

"Elena, please, just listen to me," Daniel stammered, taking a step toward the woman in the white sweater.

Claire let out a bitter, humorless laugh that cut through their hushed exchange. So the other woman’s name was Elena. How domestic, how ordinary, how disgustingly routine. Claire walked closer, ignoring the stares of passing passengers. Her eyes scanned the small metal table between the airport chairs. Resting right beside an unfinished cup of coffee was an open passport holder and two blue boarding passes. Without asking permission, Claire reached out and snatched the documents before Daniel could lunge forward to stop her.

Her eyes scanned the printed text with terrifying speed. Two tickets to Honolulu. Seat numbers 12A and 12B. Passenger names: Mr. Daniel Vance and Mrs. Elena Vance.

"Vance?" Claire breathed out, her voice dangerously soft as she looked up from the paper. "That’s funny, Daniel. Because according to our marriage certificate tucked away in our safe deposit box back home, I am Mrs. Daniel Vance."

Elena stumbled back against the armrest of the airport chair, her knees buckling slightly. She clutched the collar of her white sweater as if she couldn't catch her breath. The betrayal in Elena’s eyes mirrored Claire’s own, creating a bizarre, agonizing alliance between two women who had just discovered they were living the exact same lie. Daniel squeezed his eyes shut, his hands rubbing his temples in a desperate attempt to fend off the impending wreckage of his dual existence.

"It's not what you think," Daniel whispered miserably, staring at the polished floor.

"Then enlighten us, Daniel," Claire demanded, stepping directly into his line of sight. "Tell us how you managed to maintain two households, two mortgages, and two distinct lives for the past ten years without slipping up once."

Daniel looked up, opening his mouth to formulate an excuse, when a heavy man in a dark uniform walked past them, dropping a leather folder onto the floor right at Daniel's feet. The folder popped open, sliding out a stack of documents that bore a federal seal and a corporate letterhead neither woman expected to see.
