Chapter 1 - The Terminal Confrantation

The fluorescent lights of Terminal Four hummed like an angry wasp. Claire stood frozen, the heavy white leather strap of her handbag cutting into her bare shoulder. The sparkling light-blue dress she wore shimmered under the harsh glare, catching the reflections of hurried travelers dragging heavy suitcases across the scuffed linoleum. Only two hours ago, she had been standing on the stage of the charity gala downtown, accepting an award for community leadership, believing Daniel was safely asleep in their suburban home three hundred miles away. Instead, here he sat in a black wool sweater, slumped against an uncomfortable blue plastic airport chair, his fingers intertwined with another woman’s hand.

Daniel looked up, his face draining of all color as his eyes locked onto hers. He blinked rapidly, as if trying to wake from a nightmare.

"Claire? What are you doing here?" he asked, his voice cracking on the final syllable.

Claire stepped forward, the heels of her designer pumps clicking sharply against the floor. The surreal weight of the moment pressed down on her chest, making every breath feel like a struggle. Across from Daniel, a woman in a crisp white sweater stood up abruptly, her eyes darting between Daniel's pale face and Claire's stunning gala attire. A heavy silence descended upon their small corner of the waiting area, thick with unspoken horrors.

The woman in the white sweater planted her hands on her hips, her posture rigid with defensive confusion. She tilted her head, her gaze narrowing as she looked at Claire from head to toe.

"Wait, you know her?" the woman demanded, her voice sharp and ringing with authority.

Claire stared past the stranger, her vision tunneling until she saw only Daniel's guilt-ridden eyes. The realization hit her with the force of a physical blow—the late-night business trips, the canceled anniversaries, the phantom phone calls. It had all been a lie. A meticulously constructed, decade-long facade built on stolen weekends and double lives. The air in the terminal grew suffocating. Claire’s hands trembled, though she forced her voice to remain dangerously low, pregnant with a fury that threatened to consume them all.

"Claire, how long has this been happening?" Claire whispered, her voice trembling with barely contained rage. "How long have you been married?"

May you like

The stranger in the white sweater gasped, stumbling backward against the plastic chairs. Daniel opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. Before anyone else could draw a breath, a public address system crackled overhead, announcing the final boarding call for Flight 812 to Chicago.
