Chapter 11 - The Stolen Flash Drive

The scarred man’s finger tightened slightly on the trigger, the cold metal glinting under the harsh amber light of the van. Claire’s breath hitched, but she didn’t flinch. With a sudden, explosive motion, she swung her heavy white leather handbag upward like a mace, smashing the base directly into the gunman’s wrist.

Crack.

The gunman howled in pain, his pistol clattering onto the wet asphalt outside the van. Elena didn't hesitate; she lunged forward, hooking her foot behind the man’s ankle and shoving him hard. The scarred operative lost his footing on the slick metal threshold, tumbling backward out of the van and landing face-first in the muddy puddle.

Daniel grabbed the heavy canvas duffel bag, pulling the sliding door shut with a violent slam and locking it from the inside just as the gunman scrambled back up, slamming his fists against the reinforced glass.

"Drive!" Claire screamed up toward the partition window. "Drive, damn it!"

The engine roared to life, and the van lurched backward, spinning its tires in the mud before rocketing out of the industrial park onto the unpaved access road. Through the rear window, they watched the scarred man shrink into the distance, screaming curses into the storm.

Inside the van, silence hung heavy, broken only by their ragged breathing. Daniel slumped against the metal wall, his hands shaking violently.

"You saved my life," Daniel whispered, looking at Claire with wide, haunted eyes.

"Don't flatter yourself, Daniel," Claire snapped, wiping rain and sweat from her forehead. "I saved my own life. You just happened to be in the vehicle."

Elena sat in the corner, clutching her arms around herself, staring blankly at the floor. "Miller set us up," she said, her voice hollow. "The scarred man said Miller is working both sides. All of this—the federal protection, the cartel threats, the double life—it was all a scam engineered by your handler."

Daniel buried his face in his hands, groaning in sheer agony. "He told me if I didn't help him audit those accounts, my family would pay. I thought I was protecting you both. But I was just a pawn in Miller's own embezzlement scheme."

Claire opened the manila folder once more, examining the hidden micro-chip slot attached to the back of the primary ledger. Her fingers traced the edge of the cardboard until she felt a tiny, raised bump. With a sharp fingernail, she peeled back the cardboard backing.

A tiny, black USB flash drive dropped out into her palm.

"Is this what they were looking for?" Claire asked, holding up the drive.

Daniel stared at it in shock. "That's the master ledger. Every transaction Miller made using my identity, every offshore account, every corrupted federal wire—it's all on that drive."

Suddenly, the van’s onboard communication radio crackled to life with static, followed by Agent Miller’s calm, chilling voice echoing through the cabin.

"Vance, I know you have the master drive. Pull over immediately, or the tactical unit intercepting your vehicle will not use rubber bullets."
