Chapter 4 - The Man in the Gray Suit

The man in the gray suit wore dark sunglasses indoors, reflecting the glaring fluorescent lights of Terminal Four. He did not blink as Elena came to an abrupt halt inches from his chest. He reached inside his jacket, his movements slow and deliberate, and flashed a small leather badge that none of the women could read clearly before he tucked it back away.
"Excuse me, ma'am," the man said in a low, flat baritone. "Terminal security is conducting a random travel audit. Please step back into the seating area."
"I am leaving," Elena said, her voice rising with frustration. "Move out of my way."
"I'm afraid flight departures from this concourse are temporarily paused for domestic travelers," the man replied, his gaze shifting past Elena to lock directly onto Daniel. A subtle nod passed between the man in the gray suit and Daniel—a silent signal that sent a cold shudder down Claire’s spine.
Claire uncrossed her arms, stepping past Elena to confront the stranger. "Who are you? What is going on here?"
The man in the gray suit finally removed his sunglasses, revealing cold, lifeless gray eyes. "Mrs. Vance, I presume. And Miss Hayes," he added, nodding toward Elena. "My name is Agent Miller. Your husband is currently engaged in an active federal asset recovery protocol. If you walk out those doors right now, you jeopardize not only his assignment, but your own safety."
Daniel buried his face in his hands, groaning softly. "I told you not to follow me, Miller. I told you I needed to handle this cleanly."
"You didn't handle anything cleanly, Vance," Miller snapped back, his voice losing its polite veneer. "You left a paper trail a mile wide, and now you’ve got two civilian wives confronting you in a public airport terminal like characters in a bad soap opera."
Elena stared at Daniel, her voice trembling with disbelief. "Federal asset recovery? What is he talking about, Daniel? Is any part of our five-year marriage real?"
"Everything with you was real, Elena," Daniel whispered, looking up with genuine anguish. "And everything with Claire was real, too. That’s the hell of it. I didn't plan this. It just... snowballed."
Claire felt a cold numbness wash over her. Ten years of anniversaries, holidays, shared meals, and quiet nights on the couch—all of it happening simultaneously with another woman's five-year milestone. Yet, Miller’s presence injected a chilling reality into the room that superseded the domestic betrayal. This wasn't just a cheating husband caught in the act; it was a man tangled in something far more dangerous than adultery.
"If you're a federal agent or whatever nonsense you claim to be," Claire said, stepping right up to Agent Miller, "then you won't mind if I check his bags right now."

Before Miller could react, Claire dropped her white handbag, spun around, and grabbed the handle of Daniel’s heavy canvas duffel bag resting by the chairs, unzipping the main compartment with a violent yank.
