Chapter 14 - The Broadcast Heard Nationwide

The upload progress bar on the satellite phone surged to one hundred percent with a soft chime. Across the country—on smartphones, television news broadcasts, and secure Department of Justice servers—the encrypted master ledger containing Agent Miller’s illegal offshore accounts, falsified asset recovery logs, and syndicate wire transfers went live in a matter of seconds.

Outside the van, Miller slammed his fists against the reinforced glass window, his face contorted in sheer, unadulterated panic. He scrambled across the wet pavement toward his dropped weapon, but sirens wailed in the distance as three unmarked federal cruisers with flashing lights pulled up from the opposite direction, boxing in both the sedan and the van.

Armed federal agents in tactical gear poured out of the cruisers, weapons drawn, shouting commands as they swarmed Miller before he could reach his gun.

"Federal agents! Down on the ground! Do it now!" a voice echoed through the rain.

Miller was slammed face-first onto the wet asphalt, his arms wrenched behind his back as steel cuffs snapped into place. He glared back at the van through the streaming rain, his career, his freedom, and his empire dissolving in an instant.

Inside the van, the tension evaporated, leaving behind a profound, exhausting silence. Daniel slumped back against the seat, his hands covering his face as silent, ragged sobs finally broke through his stoic facade.

Elena sat back down on the bench, staring at her hands. The adrenaline was fading, replaced by the heavy, sobering reality of what had transpired.

Claire lowered the satellite phone, her fingers still trembling slightly. She looked at Daniel—the man she had loved, the man who had lied, the man who had endured a living hell to keep her alive. The anger hadn't vanished entirely, but the blind fury had given way to something far more complex: closure.

"It's over," Claire said quietly, her voice echoing in the cabin.

Daniel looked up, his eyes red and swollen. "I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice cracking. "For all of it. You never deserved any of this."

"No, I didn't," Claire replied evenly. "Neither of us did."

Elena stood up, grabbing her white sweater from the seat. She looked at Daniel one last time, her expression completely neutral—neither forgiving nor bitter.

"Goodbye, Daniel," Elena said softly. She turned to Claire, offering a faint, melancholic nod. "Goodbye, Claire. Take care of yourself."

Without waiting for a reply, Elena popped the side door of the van open as federal agents cleared the perimeter, stepping out into the clearing rain and walking away toward a waiting transport vehicle, leaving Claire and Daniel alone in the back of the van as the final chapter of their shared nightmare came to a close.
