Chapter 5 - The Hidden Compartment

The heavy canvas zipper parted with a harsh rasp, exposing the contents of Daniel’s duffel bag. Neatly rolled black sweaters and spare shirts filled the top layer, but Claire didn’t hesitate. She shoved her hands past the clothing, her fingers searching along the interior lining. Her palm hit a hard, rigid ridge near the bottom—a false bottom secured with heavy-duty Velcro. With a sharp tug, she ripped the lining away, revealing a hidden compartment beneath.
Inside sat a stack of thick brown manila envelopes, several USB flash drives labeled with cryptic numerical codes, and a sleek, black passport that bore Daniel’s photograph—with a completely different name and a stamp from a South American embassy.
Elena gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. Daniel lunged forward, grabbing the edge of the bag, but Agent Miller was faster. Miller's hand clamped onto Daniel’s shoulder with iron force, forcing him back down into the chair.
"Don't touch it, Vance," Miller warned, his voice dangerously low. "You know protocol."
Claire pulled out the black passport and flipped it open. The name listed inside was Arthur Pendelton, born in Bogotá. She looked from the passport to Daniel, the man she had loved and trusted for a decade. The stranger in front of her bore his face, but the soul behind those eyes was entirely alien.
"What is this, Daniel?" Claire whispered, holding the fake passport up like a weapon. "Are you running from the law? Are you a criminal?"
"I’m not a criminal, Claire," Daniel said, his voice cracking as he strained against Miller's grip. "I’m an accountant. Ten years ago, I found embezzlement within my firm—massive, systemic fraud involving senior executives who happened to be connected to dangerous cartels. The FBI offered me a deal. New identity, relocation, continuous oversight. I couldn't tell you. If I told you, you would have been targeted."
Elena shook her head violently, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "And what about me, Daniel? We met five years ago! You weren't under federal protection then. You chose to start a second life. You chose to lie to me every single day."
"I fell in love with you," Daniel pleaded, his voice breaking. "That wasn't part of the program. I tried to walk away from both of you, but I couldn't. I was weak."
Agent Miller released Daniel’s shoulder, stepping back to adjust his suit jacket. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a secure encrypted satellite phone, tapping the screen twice before holding it to his ear.
"Control, this is Miller. We have a containment breach at Terminal Four. Civilian exposure confirmed," Miller spoke into the device, his eyes fixed on Claire and Elena. "Send the secondary transport unit. We’re bringing all three in."
Claire dropped the fake passport back into the open duffel bag, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked at Elena, and in that shared glance, a silent pact was formed. They weren't going to let themselves become collateral damage in Daniel’s web of espionage and deceit.
"We're not going anywhere with you," Claire told Miller, stepping in front of Elena defensively.
Miller smiled coldly. "You don't have a choice. Look behind you."

Claire spun around, her sparkling light-blue dress swirling around her ankles, to see two uniform airport security guards locking the glass exit doors from the outside, turning the terminal lounge into a private cage.
