Chapter 6 - The Locked Terminal Doors

The heavy metallic click of the terminal exit doors locking from the outside echoed like a gunshot through the empty concourse. Passengers in the distance began pressing against the glass partitions of the adjoining gates, confused by the sudden security lockdown. Claire rushed toward the nearest set of double doors, rattling the steel push-bar with all her might, but it refused to budge. The magnetic locks had engaged with absolute permanence.

She turned back to face Agent Miller, who stood calmly beside Daniel. Miller slipped his satellite phone back into his breast pocket with infuriating nonchalance.

"I told you, Mrs. Vance, you don't have a choice," Miller said, his tone entirely devoid of empathy. "When a federal containment protocol is initiated, the perimeter locks down automatically. No flights in, no civilians out, until my extraction team clears the sector."

Elena walked up beside Claire, her initial grief now entirely replaced by a cold, calculating fury. She crossed her arms, glaring directly at Miller.

"You can't just imprison American citizens in a public airport because our cheating husband got caught in his own web of lies," Elena said, her voice steady and sharp. "This is kidnapping, plain and simple."

"Call it whatever helps you sleep tonight, Miss Hayes," Miller replied smoothly. "The reality is that your husband wasn't just hiding a double life from you ladies. He was actively leaking classified corporate asset data to an outside syndicate. The passport in that bag wasn't issued by the FBI. It was issued by the people he’s been selling us out to."

Daniel shot out of his chair, his face contorted in rage. "That’s a lie, Miller! You set me up! You planted that passport in my bag!"

"Sit down, Vance," Miller barked, stepping forward with an intimidating aura of authority that brooked no argument. "You’ve been skimming off the top of the cartel audit accounts for eighteen months. We tracked the offshore wire transfers to an account registered under your alias."

Claire stared at Daniel, her breath catching in her throat. The man she had shared a bed with for ten years—who always complained about the rising cost of groceries and worried about their property taxes—was apparently moving millions of dollars in illicit funds through offshore accounts. Nothing made sense anymore. Every memory, every vacation, every shared laugh felt like a toxic illusion staged on a Hollywood soundstage.

"Is that true, Daniel?" Claire asked, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper. "Did you steal money?"

Daniel looked down, unable to meet her eyes, and gave a microscopic nod. "It was the only way to keep us safe," he mumbled. "They threatened you, Claire. They said if I didn't cooperate with their transfers, they would hurt you."

"Stop talking, Daniel!" Miller shouted, stepping between them as a low, mechanical rumble began to vibrate through the floor beneath their feet.

The vibration grew stronger, rattling the metal frames of the airport chairs. Outside the reinforced glass windows of Terminal Four, a heavy-duty black van with tinted windows and no license plates pulled right up to the restricted tarmac zone, cutting its headlights immediately.
