Chapter 8 - The Trap in the Tunnels

The heavy iron grate rattled violently as someone on the other side struck it with a heavy object. Arthur pushed Clorinda, Lucas, and Elena back behind a protruding brick pillar, raising his firearm with a steady, practiced grip. The dim green light from an emergency beacon mounted near the ceiling flickered and died, plunging their section of the tunnel into near-total darkness, save for the weak beam of Elena’s phone.

“Who’s there?” Arthur demanded, his voice echoing off the damp stone walls with a chilling authority.

A low, distorted laugh echoed from beyond the iron grate. A gloved hand gripped the vertical iron bars, and a face pressed against the rusted metal—not wearing a mask this time, but illuminated by a small penlight. It was Marcus Vance, Arthur’s former head of security, who had supposedly vanished three years ago with a stolen offshore portfolio.

“Good to see you too, old man,” Marcus sneered, his voice dripping with malice. “You really thought you could hide the Sterling bloodline in some cheap suburban banquet hall? We’ve been watching every move you’ve made since you stepped down.”

Elena gasped, clutching her beige shirt as recognition washed over her. “Marcus? You... you were the one who helped my father audit the accounts. You helped orchestrate the whole downfall from the inside!”

“I did more than that, Elena,” Marcus chuckled, rattling the iron bars again. “I sold your father out to the syndicate because he wanted to walk away from the operation. And now, little Lucas here is the final key to unlocking the offshore vault codes your grandfather left behind in his will.”

Arthur stepped out from behind the pillar, his weapon aimed squarely at Marcus’s face through the gaps in the grate. “The codes died with my brother, Marcus. You can tear this city apart, but you’ll never find them.”

“Is that so?” Marcus smiled coldly, stepping back from the grate and signaling off-camera. Two more men stepped into view, dragging a bound and gagged figure between them—a man with greying hair and familiar features that made Elena’s breath catch in her throat.

“Dad?” Elena screamed, taking a desperate step forward before Arthur grabbed her shoulder and yanked her back.

Her father, frail and bruised, was shoved hard against the iron grate, his terrified eyes locking onto Elena through the rusted bars.

“They’ve had him for three days, Elena,” Marcus said smoothly from the darkness beyond. “And unless you open that vault for us right now, he gets tossed into the river just like your birthday cake.”
