Chapter 11 - The Failsafe

The mention of a secondary failsafe sent a chill through the damp tunnel. Arthur took the secure tactical radio from the federal agent, his weathered face hardening instantly. He clicked the transmission button, listening to the static-filled chatter of perimeter units reporting from the surface streets above.

“What kind of failsafe, Agent Vance?” Arthur demanded into the radio, his voice sharp and commanding.

“Not Marcus—it’s an automated sequence linked to the banquet hall we just evacuated,” the agent replied, her expression grim as she pulled a ruggedized tactical tablet from her vest. She tapped the screen, bringing up a schematic of the building where Lucas’s birthday party had just been ruined. “Marcus planted a localized EMP and thermal detonation charge beneath the foundation. It’s set to detonate in less than eight minutes, leveling the entire block and burying these access tunnels permanently.”

Clorinda gasped, pulling Lucas tighter against her side. The six-year-old was shivering uncontrollably, his tiny navy suit covered in cave dust and soot. “An explosion? But there are still civilians up there—hotel staff, police officers responding to the scene!”

“Marcus didn’t care about collateral damage,” Arthur stated flatly, turning to the federal agent. “Can we disarm it remotely?”

“Negative. The detonation protocol is hardwired into an analog relay switch in the building’s basement server room,” the agent shook her head. “Anyone who goes down there has less than six minutes to manually pull the manual cut-off lever before the thermal charge triggers.”

Elena pushed herself up from the damp floor where she had been holding her injured father. Her beige shirt was stained, her hair a mess, but her eyes burned with a fierce, resolute determination. She had spent years trying to destroy Arthur and his legacy out of misplaced vengeance; this was her chance to make things right.

“Give me the schematic,” Elena said, stepping forward and holding out her hand to the federal agent.

Arthur frowned, stepping into her path. “Elena, no. That’s a suicide mission. The structural integrity of that building is already compromised from the initial gunfire.”

“I’m the one who led them here, Arthur,” Elena said, her voice steady and unwavering for the first time all night. “I’m the one who ruined the party, who threw the cake in the trash, and who walked right into Marcus’s trap. Let me fix this.”

Her father reached out a trembling hand, catching her wrist weakly. “No, sweetheart... don’t go back up there.”

“If I don’t, nobody walks out of this city alive,” Elena said softly, pressing a gentle kiss to her father’s bruised knuckles before gently removing his hand. She looked directly at Arthur. “Give me the override code for the basement door.”

Arthur stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. The stern, unyielding barrier in his eyes melted away, replaced by a profound, reluctant respect. He reached into his brown jacket, pulled out a small electronic keycard, and pressed it into her palm.

“Basement sub-level three. Turn left past the electrical grid, and pull the red lever down hard,” Arthur instructed, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. “You have four minutes, Elena. Don’t look back.”
