Chapter 3 - The Intruder in the Hallway

The metallic clatter reverberated through the empty banquet hall, freezing everyone in their tracks. One of the burly bodyguards stationed by the glass doors instantly shifted his stance, his hand dropping smoothly toward his jacket interior where a holster rested. Arthur held up a single, weathered hand, signaling the guard to hold his position while he turned his head sharply toward the entrance.

“Stay behind me,” Arthur muttered under his breath, though it wasn’t clear whether he was speaking to Clorinda, the crying boy, or even Elena.

Elena crossed her arms over her beige shirt, her earlier defiance momentarily faltering as she stared at the shadowed corridor beyond the glass. “I came alone,” she whispered, her voice losing its edge. “Nobody else knew I was tracking down this party.”

“People who hunt wolves rarely realize they’ve walked into a pack’s territory until it’s too late,” Arthur said grimly. He gestured to the second bodyguard, who began moving cautiously toward the double doors, his heavy footsteps muffled by the carpeted outer hallway.

Clorinda slowly rose to her feet, keeping Lucas tucked safely behind the skirt of her light blue dress. The boy’s tear-stained face peeked out from behind her hip, his wide blue eyes staring at the dark glass doors with mounting dread. The cheerful balloons overhead suddenly felt mocking, dancing in the draft coming from the vent above.

“Arthur, check the security feeds,” Clorinda urged, her voice tight with anxiety. “If someone followed Elena here, they might have targeted the venue before we even arrived.”

Arthur pulled a sleek, encrypted device from his brown jacket pocket with surprising dexterity. He tapped the screen twice, bringing up a live grid of surveillance angles covering the building’s perimeter. Most feeds flickered with normal activity—empty parking lots, distant streetlights—but the camera facing the rear service corridor showed something entirely different. A tall figure in a dark trench coat was casually leaning against the wall, staring directly into the lens with an expressionless white mask pressed to their face.

“We’re compromised,” Arthur stated flatly, his eyes narrowing as he studied the tiny screen. He looked up, locking eyes with Elena. “Someone tracked your car here, Elena. They didn’t come to stop you from ruining a cake. They came to finish a bloodline.”

Elena’s face drained of what little color it had left, her hands dropping limply to her sides. “No... that’s impossible. I made sure I wasn’t followed.”

“Amateurs always think they’re invisible,” Arthur replied coldly, sliding the device back into his pocket. He turned to the guards. “Secure the perimeter. No one leaves this building alive until I find out who’s watching us.”

Before the guards could reach the doors, the lights in the banquet hall flickered violently and plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
