Chapter 6 - The Kitchen Escape

Arthur fired three rapid shots, forcing the masked intruder to dive behind a flipped banquet table, but the delay was dangerously short. The lead attacker recovered instantly, signaling the others to flank the kitchen entrance. Dust and smoke choked the air, burning the back of Elena’s throat as she forced herself up from the floor. Her beige shirt was stained with soot, her dark hair completely unraveling from its once-severe knot.

She couldn’t let them die. Not after knowing the truth.

Seizing a heavy metal chafing dish filled with cold, congealed gravy from a side table, Elena hurled it with all her might toward the center of the room. It smashed against a pillar with a loud clang, drawing the immediate attention of the armed men. For a crucial three seconds, their rifles pivoted away from the kitchen doors.

“Arthur, move!” Elena screamed, lunging across the glass-strewn floor toward the heavy swinging doors of the kitchen.

Arthur didn’t hesitate. He emptied the remainder of his clip into the floor near the attackers’ feet to kick up a blinding cloud of drywall dust, then sprinted alongside Elena, diving through the kitchen doors just as a barrage of bullets chewed through the wooden panels behind them.

Inside the industrial kitchen, the air was cool and smelled faintly of bleach and old grease. Clorinda stood by the stainless-steel prep tables, her chest heaving as she tried to calm Lucas, who was curled into a trembling ball near a large commercial refrigerator. The heavy silver pocket watch Arthur had given him was clutched tightly in his small, pale hands.

“Are you hit?” Clorinda asked frantically, rushing forward to check Arthur as he slammed the heavy steel deadbolt on the kitchen doors.

“I’m fine. Just a graze,” Arthur panted, pressing his ear against the cold metal door to listen for the sound of the intruders attempting to breach the lock. Heavy thuds began to echo from the other side. “They’re bringing a breaching charge. This door won’t hold for more than sixty seconds.”

Elena slammed her hands onto a stainless-steel counter, her eyes wide with shock and adrenaline. “Where does the service corridor lead? There has to be a way out to the loading docks.”

“It leads straight into the underground parking garage, but the elevators are disabled,” Clorinda said, her voice shaking as she gestured toward a heavy fire-escape stairwell door at the far end of the kitchen. “Arthur told us to take the stairs, but if they’ve sealed the perimeter, we’ll walk right into an ambush.”

Arthur turned away from the door, his expression grim as he pulled a massive set of master keys from his brown jacket. “There’s an old maintenance tunnel underneath the stairwell. It connects directly to the city’s storm drainage system. It’s narrow, dark, and freezing, but it’s the only way out alive.”

Lucas looked up from the floor, his blue eyes wide and terrified. “I don’t want to go in the dark, Uncle Arthur. I want to go home.”

“We’ll go together, son,” Arthur said softly, kneeling down and adjusting the boy’s crooked black bow tie with a surprisingly tender touch. “Trust me.”

Before Arthur could unlock the maintenance door, the kitchen door behind them exploded inward with a deafening roar.
