Chapter 10 - The Exchange

The seconds ticked by like heavy drops of lead falling into a stagnant pool. Marcus stared at the small black metallic drive in Arthur’s hand, his eyes shifting nervously between the blinking blue LED and the dark tunnel corridor behind them. He knew federal agents were the last thing he wanted breathing down his neck, but the temptation of the Sterling vault outweighed his caution.

“You’re in no position to negotiate, Arthur,” Marcus snarled, pressing the pistol harder against the temple of Elena’s bound father. “Hand over the drive first, or I pull the trigger right now!”

“Do it,” a voice echoed from the shadows behind Marcus, making the traitorous security head stiffen.

From the darkness of the outer chamber, a tall woman in a dark tactical jumpsuit stepped into the dim beam of Marcus’s penlight. Her dark hair was cut short, and her face bore the cold, calculating expression of a seasoned operative. She held a heavy assault rifle aimed squarely at Marcus’s chest.

“Agent Vance,” the woman said coldly, her voice carrying an unmistakable ring of absolute authority. “Drop your weapon. Federal task force. You’re completely surrounded.”

Marcus’s face drained of color. He looked wildly toward the exit tunnel behind him, where the faint sound of approaching tactical boots echoed through the brickwork. He realized too late that Arthur’s calm demeanor hadn’t been desperation—it had been a stalling tactic designed to buy the federal strike team enough time to locate their coordinates via the tracking signal embedded in Lucas’s pocket watch.

“You rigged the watch,” Marcus whispered, turning his horrified gaze toward Arthur.

“You talk too much on open frequencies, Marcus,” Arthur replied calmly, slipping the decryption drive back into his jacket pocket. “Greed makes people sloppy.”

In a frantic burst of panic, Marcus shoved Elena’s father hard against the iron grate and bolted into the darkness, abandoning his henchmen. The two guards holding the prisoner dropped their weapons instantly, raising their hands in the air as the federal agent stepped closer and kicked their sidearms away into the drainage runoff.

Clorinda rushed forward, using a small pocket knife she had carried in her dress pocket to slice through the heavy ropes binding Elena’s father. The older man slumped forward, gasping for air as Clorinda and Elena caught him, pulling him away from the rusted iron bars.

“Dad! Dad, are you okay?” Elena cried, wrapping her arms around his battered shoulders, hot tears finally breaking free and streaming down her cheeks.

“I’m... I’m alright, sweetheart,” her father wheezed, his voice weak and raspy. He looked up, his clouded eyes finding Arthur standing a few feet away. “You came back for us, Arthur.”

“I told you I’d protect this family, James,” Arthur said quietly, adjusting the collar of his brown jacket. “No matter how hard your daughter tried to tear it apart.”

Elena lowered her head in shame, the memory of dumping the chocolate cake into the grey trash can flashing painfully through her mind. But before she could speak, the federal agent stepped up to Arthur, handing him a secure tactical radio.

“Sir, Vance’s escape route leads to the main street, but our perimeter units have him trapped,” the agent reported crisply. “However, there’s a complication. Vance triggered a secondary failsafe before he fled.”
