Chapter 7 - The Maintenance Tunnel

The blast wave knocked Arthur and Elena off their feet, sending stainless-steel pans clattering across the tiled floor in a chaotic wave of noise. Thick, grey smoke poured through the shattered remains of the kitchen door, obscuring the figures of the masked intruders as they stepped through the wreckage with weapons raised.

“Move! Now!” Arthur yelled, scrambling back to his feet and grabbing Lucas by the shoulders while Clorinda shoved Elena toward the open fire-escape stairwell door.

They tumbled down the concrete steps into the freezing gloom of the underground maintenance level just as a hail of silenced bullets pinged off the metal doorframe behind them. Arthur slammed the heavy fire door shut, throwing a thick iron security bar across the brackets just as the attackers slammed their weight against the other side. The metal groaned under the assault, holding by a thread.

“Down here!” Arthur commanded, pointing his flashlight down a narrow, damp brick tunnel that sloped steeply downward into the bowels of the building. The air smelled of stagnant water, rust, and damp earth.

Clorinda picked up Lucas, carrying the six-year-old in her arms despite the restrictive constraint of her light blue dress. Elena followed closely behind, using the beam of her own phone—now picking up a faint, erratic local network—to illuminate the slick, uneven stone floor.

“How far does this go?” Elena asked, her voice echoing off the damp brick walls as the muffled sound of shouting and heavy boots echoed from the stairwell above them.

“About half a mile,” Arthur replied, leading the pack with his weapon drawn and ready. “It exits near the old rail yards. My transport vehicle should still be parked in the maintenance sector if the secondary team hasn't been compromised.”

As they hurried deeper into the labyrinthine tunnels, the ambient temperature plummeted, causing their breath to plume in white clouds in the beam of their lights. Lucas buried his face in Clorinda’s shoulder, shivering violently from the cold and the sheer terror of the night.

“I’m sorry,” Elena said suddenly, her voice cracking in the dark space. She was speaking to Arthur, her back turned to him as she watched for pursuit behind them. “All these years... I blamed you for ruining my life. I spent every waking moment trying to tear down everything you built, while you were just trying to keep us from being killed by the syndicate.”

Arthur didn't slow his pace. “Your father made his choices, Elena. When you sit at the top of a multi-billion-dollar shipping empire, you make enemies who don't care about corporate ethics. They care about bloodlines. That’s why Lucas was targeted tonight. Not because of a cake, and not because of a grudge.”

Clorinda shifted Lucas in her arms, her breathing heavy. “Arthur, you said the syndicate is hunting our family. Who ordered the hit? Who knows we’re still connected?”

Arthur stopped abruptly in the center of the tunnel, raising his hand to signal absolute silence. The flickering beam of his flashlight cut through the damp air, illuminating a heavy iron grate set into the brick wall ahead.

“We’re about to find out,” Arthur whispered, stepping slowly toward the grate. “Because someone is waiting for us on the other side.”
