Chapter 5 - Shattered Glass

The explosive blast sent a million jagged shards of tempered glass raining across the linoleum floor like a deadly cascade of diamonds. The sickly-green emergency lights flickered and died, leaving the banquet hall illuminated only by the faint, smoky haze drifting in from the shattered entryway. Arthur moved with astonishing speed for a man of sixty, shoving Clorinda and Lucas behind a heavy mahogany buffet table just as a barrage of silenced gunfire chewed into the wall above them.

Wood splinters rained down, mixing with the ruined remnants of the chocolate cake still sitting in the open trash can nearby. Elena screamed, pressing her back flat against the far wall as a bullet ricocheted off a metal folding chair inches from her boots. She slid down to the floor, pulling her knees to her chest, her beige shirt stained with grey dust and soot.

“Get to the kitchen!” Arthur roared over the echoing cracks of suppressed gunfire. He fired two calculated shots toward the shadowy figures now stepping through the broken glass frame. One of the intruders stumbled backward, hit in the shoulder, but two more took his place, advancing with methodical, military-grade precision.

Clorinda didn’t hesitate. Gripping Lucas’s small hand tightly, she hauled the crying boy to his feet. “Run, Lucas! Don’t look back!” she yelled, dragging him toward the swinging double doors at the back of the banquet hall that led to the industrial kitchens. Lucas’s little black bow tie was crooked, his navy suit dusty and torn at the hem, but his legs pumped frantically as he followed her lead.

Elena watched them flee, a sudden wave of guilt washing over her. She looked at Arthur, who was methodically reloading his weapon behind a concrete pillar near the ruined cake station, blood trickling from a shallow graze on his forearm.

“Why are you protecting them?” Elena shouted across the smoky room, ducking as another round of bullets shattered the remaining balloons overhead, sending a shower of metallic shreds to the floor. “You destroyed my father! You could let us all burn in here!”

Arthur didn’t look at her, his eyes fixed on the advancing figures in the dark trench coats. “Your father didn’t lose his company to a corporate buyout, Elena! I took the fall for him! I absorbed the debt to keep federal agents from dragging him away in handcuffs, and I let you all hate me so you’d stay far away from the syndicate hunting our family!”

The revelation hit Elena like a physical blow. The air rushed out of her lungs as twenty years of bitter resentment unraveled in a single, deafening second. Her father hadn't been a victim of corporate greed; he had been a criminal protected by the very man she had spent her entire adult life trying to destroy.

One of the intruders raised a high-caliber rifle, aiming directly at the kitchen doors where Clorinda and Lucas had just disappeared.
