Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The heavy silence in the banquet hall felt suffocating, broken only by the faint, rhythmic hum of the ceiling ventilation. Arthur Sterling took another deliberate step forward, his worn leather boots clicking sharply against the polished linoleum floor. His stern gaze remained locked on Elena, who stood tall by the grey trash can, her jaw clenched in silent defiance. The two bodyguards stayed positioned by the double glass doors, their presence casting a looming, intimidating shadow over the festive room.
Clorinda dropped to her knees beside little Lucas, wrapping her arms tightly around the boy’s small shoulders. She pulled him against the light blue fabric of her dress, trying to shield him from the intense energy radiating from the older man. Lucas buried his face in her collarbone, his small frame still shuddering with quiet, exhausted sobs.
“Arthur, you shouldn’t have come here,” Elena said finally, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. She kept her beige button-down shirt smooth, smoothing the fabric down over her black pants with calculated precision. “This isn’t your company boardrooms or your sprawling estate. This is about what was stolen from me, and from my mother, twenty years ago.”
Arthur stopped just three paces away from them. His face was weathered by decades of ruthless corporate battles, but right now, his eyes held a complex mix of warning and suppressed sorrow. He shifted his weight, the leather of his brown jacket creaking softly in the quiet room.
“You think destroying a child’s birthday cake rewrites history, Elena?” Arthur asked, his tone dangerously low. “You think a petty act of vandalism against a six-year-old brings back what your father gambled away?”
“My father didn’t gamble it away, and you know it,” Elena fired back, taking a sharp step toward him, ignoring Clorinda’s warning look. “You forced him out. You orchestrated the buyout, seized the patents, and left us with nothing while you built an empire on stolen ground. Lucas bears your name. He carries your bloodline. It’s only fitting he tastes the bitter filth you fed my family.”
Arthur’s eyes flared with a sudden, sharp intensity. He didn’t raise his voice, but the sheer weight of his authority made the air feel thin. “You know nothing about what happened the night your father stepped down. If you think the Sterling name is a curse, you have no idea what terrible danger you’ve just invited into your life by coming after this boy.”
Clorinda looked up, panic flashing across her features as she clutched Lucas tighter. “Arthur, what are you talking about? What danger?”

Before Arthur could answer, a sharp, metallic clatter echoed from the hallway outside the double glass doors, shattering the tense quiet.
