Chapter 7 - The Silver Cuffs

"Mrs. Eleanor Vance?" the lead police officer asked, stepping forward with an official paper in his hand. "You are being placed under arrest for kidnapping fraud, identity theft, and the unlawful concealment of a minor from the 1994 probate court."
The metallic click of the handcuffs being unlatched sounded deafening in the grand foyer.
Julian didn't move to stop them. He stood paralyzed, his dark suit jacket still hanging over his arm while his world fell completely apart. Eleanor didn't scream or thrash; instead, she straightened her beige dress with chilling composure, her chin held high as the officer grabbed her frail wrists and pulled them behind her back.
"You are making a catastrophic mistake," Eleanor said, her voice dripping with venom as she glared directly at her newfound daughter. "You think this house, this money, these papers mean something? You’re inheriting a bankrupt shell."
"Bankrupt?" the stranger asked, raising an eyebrow as she snapped her briefcase shut. "The forensic audit was completed this morning, Mother. The Vance accounts have over forty million dollars sitting offshore, all funneled through dummy corporations registered in your maiden name."
Eleanor’s cold exterior finally fractured, a flash of pure panic crossing her features before she masked it behind a sneer.
"Take her away," Julian whispered to the officers, his voice hollow and dead. He couldn't bear to look at his mother’s face another second longer.
The officers escorted Eleanor out the front door toward a waiting squad car, her pearl necklace bouncing rhythmically against her beige dress with every step. The heavy oak door slammed shut behind them, sealing the cavernous foyer in a stifling, suffocating silence.
Clara let out a long, shaky breath, her hand sliding down to protect her swollen stomach as she swayed slightly on her feet. Julian dropped his suit jacket onto the console table and rushed forward, catching her by the elbow before she could hit the marble floor.
"Are you okay? Do we need to go to the hospital?" Julian asked, his voice thick with panic as he scanned her pale face.
"I'm fine, Julian. Just... overwhelmed," Clara murmured, leaning her head against his shoulder.
The stranger stood by the console table, watching them with a quiet, unreadable expression. She picked up the folded birth certificate and slipped it back into her leather briefcase.

"We need to talk about the assets," the stranger said quietly. "All of them."
