Chapter 3 - The Gold Seal of Deception

The harsh fluorescent lights of the kitchen beat down on the charred piece of legal paper pinched between Julian’s trembling fingers. The embossed gold state seal caught the glare, gleaming mockingly against the dark, soot-stained edges.
Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. He recognized the official seal; he had signed dozens of similar documents as a corporate attorney, but seeing it here, tied to his own family's history, felt like a physical blow to his stomach.
"This... this is authentic," Julian whispered, his voice hollow and detached, as if he were speaking from the bottom of a deep well. He slowly turned his head to look at Eleanor, whose beige dress suddenly seemed entirely too large for her shrinking frame. "Mom. Tell me this isn't what it looks like."
"Put that down, Julian," Eleanor commanded, her voice dropping all pretense of fury, replaced by a cold, imperious chill that had ruled their household for decades. "You are looking at garbage. Literally. Whatever lies that girl fed you while you were at the office are just the pathetic delusions of an outsider trying to claw her way into our family fortune."
"She didn't tell me anything until you tried to crush her windpipe!" Julian roared, the sudden violence of his outburst making Clara flinch. "You don't attack a pregnant woman over garbage unless that garbage is going to put you in prison, Mom!"
"Watch your tone with me," Eleanor warned, stepping forward with an eerie, composed grace that made her look like a queen facing an insolent peasant. "I raised you. I gave you everything. And now you're listening to a gold-digger who showed up on our doorstep with nothing more than a cute smile and a fabricated belly?"
"My belly is real!" Clara cried out, stepping out from behind Julian with her hands balled into tight fists at her sides. Her blue bodycon dress stretched taut across her frame as she glared at Eleanor with unabashed hatred. "And so is the DNA test I locked in the safe deposit box at First National Bank this morning."
Eleanor stopped dead in her tracks. The elegant mask of absolute superiority cracked for a fraction of a second, exposing a well of pure, unadulterated terror in her eyes.
Julian caught the micro-expression. His heart hammered violently against his ribs. He slowly lowered the charred paper back toward the trash can, his eyes never leaving his mother's face.
"What safe deposit box, Clara?" Julian asked quietly.
May you like
Before Clara could open her mouth to answer, the sharp, shrill chime of the front doorbell echoed through the expansive house, shattering the suffocating tension of the kitchen.
