Chapter 6 - The Woman in the Trench Coat

The stranger stepped fully into the foyer, shedding her wet trench coat to reveal a sharp gray pantsuit that contrasted sharply with Eleanor’s elegant beige dress.
Julian stared at the newcomer, a strange, inexplicable pull twisting in his chest as he looked at the shape of her jawline and the intense blue of her eyes. It was like looking into a distorted mirror of his own reflection.
"Who are you?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping to a cautious whisper. "How did you get past the security gates?"
"Your security system is thirty years old, Julian. Mother never updated the codes after the 1994 settlement," the woman replied, her tone cool, analytical, and entirely devoid of emotion. She turned her gaze directly toward Eleanor, whose pale face had lost every trace of its defiant color. "Hello, Mother. It’s been a long time since you locked me in the attic and told the adoption agency I was stillborn."
The silence in the foyer became absolute. Even the federal agents paused their sweep of the hallway, watching the family drama unfold with professional detachment.
Eleanor gripped the wooden banister of the grand staircase, her knuckles turning white as porcelain. "You are an imposter. A fraud hired by this little leech to extort our family."
"Is that why I match your mitochondrial DNA on every commercial registry in the country?" the stranger asked smoothly, pulling a folded document from her briefcase and tossing it onto the mahogany console table. "Or why I have the original birth certificate signed by the attending physician who conveniently retired to the Cayman Islands the week after I was born?"
Clara walked over to Julian, gently placing a hand on his forearm. Her touch was grounding, pulling him back from the precipice of absolute denial.
"She's your older sister, Julian," Clara whispered gently, her eyes full of sorrow. "The firstborn child. The one your mother erased so you could inherit the entire Vance manufacturing empire alone."
Julian looked down at Clara, then across at the stranger who claimed his blood, and finally back at Eleanor, who was now trembling visibly against the staircase railing. The entire foundation of his life—his career, his wealth, his mother's spotless reputation—was dissolving into dust right before his eyes.
"Is it true?" Julian asked Eleanor, his voice cracking with a devastation that cut deeper than any anger. "Did you really abandon my sister?"

Before Eleanor could answer, the front door swung wide open again, and a pair of uniformed local police officers rushed into the foyer with handcuffs already unclipped from their utility belts.
