Chapter 13 - The Vault of Secrets

The stone staircase plunged down into the darkness before opening into a vast, underground chamber illuminated by harsh, emergency fluorescent lighting that hummed with a high-pitched whine.

Rows of metal filing cabinets and heavy iron safety deposit boxes lined the stone walls, stretching back into the shadows like a subterranean bank vault. The air was thick and freezing, smelling strongly of mold and old paper.

Julian pulled Clara behind him, shielding her body with his own as Eleanor descended right behind them, holding the revolver steady in her right hand.

"Look around, Julian," Eleanor commanded, gesturing broadly with the gun toward the rows of cabinets. "This is what you're trying to destroy. This is the blood, sweat, and tears of the Vance legacy."

"This is a tomb, Mom," Julian said, his voice echoing off the cold stone walls. "You've been living in a tomb your entire life, guarding stolen paper."

"It's power!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking with sudden, uncontained hysteria. "Without this power, we are nothing! Without this money, we are just ordinary people living in the dirt!"

Clara slowly released Julian’s hand, stepping tentatively toward a small wooden desk sitting in the center of the underground vault. On top of the desk sat an old, open ledger surrounded by hundreds of loose photographs.

Julian glanced over, his breath catching in his throat. The photographs were pictures of him as a baby—along with pictures of a little girl who looked identical to Sarah. But across every single picture of the little girl, a heavy red 'X' had been drawn with permanent marker.

"She was never going to let you have the company, Julian," a weak voice echoed from the top of the stone staircase.

Everyone whipped around. Sarah stood at the top of the open stairwell, having managed to slip past the distracted security guards. She held her smartphone up high, the screen flashing brightly.

"The federal marshals are pulling through the gates right now, Eleanor!" Sarah shouted down into the vault. "The entire property is surrounded!"

Eleanor’s face went completely blank. She slowly lowered the revolver, her arm dropping to her side as the harsh fluorescent lights hummed overhead. For the first time since the ordeal began, she looked old—truly old, frail, and utterly defeated.

"It doesn't matter," Eleanor whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the lights. "They won't find the primary ledger."

She reached out and pressed a large, red panic button embedded in the stone wall beside the desk.
