Chapter 12 - The Hidden Passage

With a deep, grinding mechanical groan, the heavy mahogany bookshelf swung inward, revealing a dark, steep stone staircase descending into the bowels of the earth.
A rush of cold, stagnant air billowed up from the opening, carrying the heavy scent of old dust, aged paper, and damp stone. Clara gasped, covering her nose and mouth with her hand as she stepped backward toward Julian.
"I told you," Eleanor said, a triumphant gleam in her eyes as she pointed the revolver toward the dark opening. "The Vance family empire isn't sitting in some offshore bank account in the Caymans. It’s right down there. Every stock certificate, every land deed, every dirty secret your father and I collected over forty years."
Julian stared down the dark staircase, his mind reeling. "You kept everything under the house? While we were living upstairs eating dinner every night?"
"It’s called security, Julian," Eleanor snapped impatiently. "Now, move. Both of you. Down the stairs. If anyone tries anything clever, I won't hesitate."
Sarah managed to push herself up from the hallway floor, her shoulder bruised where the guard had struck her. She limped toward the study door, ignoring the warning grip of the security guard.
"You're not going anywhere down there, Eleanor," Sarah called out, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "The federal marshals are already tracking the panic beacon in my briefcase!"
Eleanor paused at the edge of the stairwell, her face twisting into a mask of pure fury. She turned the barrel of the revolver away from Clara and pointed it directly at Sarah’s chest.
"Your briefcase doesn't have a beacon, Sarah. It has a bomb."
The blood drained from Sarah’s face. She looked down at the battered leather briefcase sitting by the hallway console table, her eyes widening in absolute horror.
"You... you didn't," Sarah whispered.
"Try me," Eleanor hissed, her finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "Julian, move! Down the stairs right now, or I swear to God I will pull this trigger and blow this entire house into orbit."

Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed Clara’s shaking hand, pulling her toward the dark stone opening. As they descended into the cold, damp gloom, the heavy mahogany bookshelf slowly began to swing shut behind them with a deafening, final thud.
