Chapter 2 - The Scent of Burned Ink

"What did you just say?" Julian repeated, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble that echoed off the sterile white kitchen tiles.

Clara swallowed hard, her hand still protective over her stomach while Julian blocked Eleanor from lunging forward again. The smell of charred paper hung heavy in the air, drifting lazily from the open trash can where bits of legal stationery fluttered near the rim.

"I said the papers in that bin aren't office junk," Clara replied, her voice gaining a desperate strength despite her trembling lips. "They are the final probate decrees from the state archive. The ones your mother spent thirty years making sure no one would ever find."

Eleanor’s face twisted in sheer panic. "She’s lying, Julian! The girl is hallucinating from the stress of pregnancy. She’s unstable, she’s always been unstable!"

"Shut up, Mom," Julian snapped without turning around, his eyes locked onto Clara’s terrified face. "Keep talking, Clara. What do those papers prove?"

"They prove that the man you call uncle—the one who supposedly died in the fire thirty years ago—was actually your biological father," Clara said, tears spilling over her lower lashes as she delivered the crushing blow. "And your mother knew. She engineered the entire inheritance transfer."

Julian staggered backward a half-step, colliding with the edge of the kitchen island. His dark suit jacket remained crumpled on the floor where he had dropped it to pull his mother away. The revelation hung between them like a physical weight, suffocating the bright, sterile room until breathing felt impossible.

"That's a complete fabrication," Eleanor hissed, though the fiery anger in her posture had given way to a defensive, cornered stiffness. "You found some old drafts and let your paranoid imagination run wild."

"Drafts don't have the state seal embossed in gold leaf," Clara countered, pointing a shaky finger directly at the trash can. "I pulled the top sheet out just before you jumped on me. The seal is right there under the ashes."

Julian didn't wait for his mother to reply. He bypassed Clara entirely, taking two long strides toward the stainless-steel bin. His hand hovered over the scorched paper, his fingers hesitating as the reality of what lay inside began to set in. With a sharp intake of breath, he reached down and pinched the corner of the topmost charred document, lifting it into the harsh kitchen light.
