Chapter 5 - The Federal Warrant

The word 'probate' seemed to drop the temperature in the grand foyer by twenty degrees.
Julian stared at the open leather badge held out by the federal agent, his mind struggling to connect the badge, the federal warrant, and the charred papers sitting in the kitchen trash can. He looked sideways at his mother, who stood at the entrance of the hallway with her hands neatly folded over the beige fabric of her dress, looking as calm as if she were greeting Sunday churchgoers.
"There must be some mistake," Julian said, his voice tight and defensive as he stepped between the agents and his mother. "I'm an officer of the court myself. What is the basis for this warrant? Who initiated a federal asset search on my family's private estate?"
"That information is detailed in the attachment, counselor," the second agent replied smoothly, stepping past Julian with practiced ease. "Step aside, please. We have authorization to secure the premises, including all waste receptacles and personal safes."
Julian turned his head sharply toward Clara. She stood near the living room archway, her long brown hair framing a face that was remarkably calm—too calm for someone who had just been choked minutes earlier.
"You called them," Julian stated, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "You filed the federal complaint before you even came to the house today."
"I filed it three days ago, Julian," Clara corrected softly, stepping forward into the light of the crystal chandelier. "When I found out that your mother wasn't just hiding paperwork, but was actively liquidating the trust fund meant for your true sister—the one she abandoned at birth."
Eleanor let out a sharp, aristocratic laugh that sounded completely unhinged in the quiet foyer. "Oh, brilliant, Julian! Your little pregnant girlfriend has spun you a fairy tale about a secret sister. Next thing you know, she'll tell you we're living on stolen pirate gold."
"It's not a fairy tale, Eleanor," a calm, unfamiliar voice called out from the open front doorway.

Everyone froze. Julian turned slowly toward the threshold, where a third person stepped into the foyer—a woman in her early thirties with short brown hair, wearing a dark trench coat, carrying a battered leather briefcase that bore the exact same family crest engraved on Eleanor’s silver tea set.
