Chapter 10 - Intruders in the Dark

Julian froze, his hand still resting inches from the silver flash drive on the desk.
Clara gasped, pulling her knees up into the armchair as her face drained of all color. Sarah reacted instantly, diving across the floor to shut off the heavy brass study lamp, plunging the room into near-total darkness save for the pale glow of the laptop screen.
"Stay here," Sarah whispered fiercely, crouching low as she pulled a small, heavy brass paperweight from the desk.
"Wait, don't go out there—" Julian started, but Sarah had already slipped out the heavy oak study door into the dark, cavernous hallway.
From downstairs, the muffled sound of heavy footsteps echoed up the grand staircase. Someone was moving through the house with absolute confidence, bypassing the security sensors that Julian had personally programmed. The heavy crystal chandelier in the foyer had clearly been smashed, leaving a trail of sparkling debris across the marble floor.
"Julian," Clara whispered from the shadows of the armchair, her voice shaking violently. "Someone is in the house. They're coming up the stairs."
Julian grabbed his heavy legal briefcase off the floor, slipping his laptop inside with fumbling fingers before snapping the latches shut. He crept toward the doorway, peering out into the darkened hallway where moonlight streamed through the tall arched windows.
A tall silhouette loomed at the top of the stairs, standing motionless against the pale light.
"Who's there?" Julian called out, his voice echoing unnaturally in the silent hallway. "Identify yourself or I will call the police!"
The silhouette didn't answer. Instead, a heavy, deliberate footstep creaked on the topmost floorboard.
Suddenly, a flashlight beam cut through the darkness, blinding Julian with a harsh white glare right in his eyes. He threw his arm up to shield his face, stumbling backward into the study just as a familiar, gravelly voice echoed from the landing.
"You really thought a simple federal freeze would keep me locked away from my own home, didn't you, Julian?"
Eleanor Vance stepped into the doorway of the study, her beige dress slightly wrinkled, her short blonde hair slightly disheveled, but her eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying madness.
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. "Mom? How are you out? You were remanded without bail!"
Eleanor smiled, stepping past Sarah—who was pinned against the hallway wall by two burly men in dark security uniforms.

"Money talks, my dear boy," Eleanor purred, stepping into the dark study with slow, deliberate strides. "And I have a lot more of it than the federal government realizes."
