Chapter 8 - The Inheritance of Debt

Evelyn clutched the heavy black landline receiver to her ear, her chest rising and falling in shallow, rapid breaths. The voice on the other end of the line was crisp, professional, and entirely devoid of empathy.

"Mrs. Hayes?" the voice asked again. "I'm calling from the First National Bank's legal department regarding the joint mortgage and commercial loans tied to your late husband's estate."

Evelyn swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward Nia, who was still slumped over the dining table, crying quietly into her arms.

"Yes," Evelyn whispered hoarsely, gripping the edge of the kitchen counter for support. "I'm here."

"We’ve uncovered a discrepancy," the representative continued smoothly. "The properties in Glendale and the primary residence are currently facing immediate foreclosure proceedings. There was a secondary mortgage taken out against both titles three weeks ago, authorized under your late husband's signature, but backed by a power of attorney assigned to... well, to Marcus Taylor."

Evelyn’s breath hitched in her throat. The room seemed to tilt sideways. "To Marcus? My daughter's fiancé?"

"That is correct. The funds—totaling over three hundred thousand dollars—were transferred yesterday into a private offshore account. Since you and your daughters are the primary beneficiaries of the estate, you are all legally liable for the default."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Evelyn lowered the phone slowly, her hand shaking so violently she nearly dropped the heavy plastic handset. She walked back into the dining room, her legs feeling like lead beneath her olive green blouse.

Nia looked up, wiping her tear-stained cheeks with the sleeve of her cream silk shirt. "Who was that, Mom? Was it Maya?"

"No," Evelyn said, her voice completely hollow, devoid of any warmth or life. "That wasn't Maya."

"Then who was it?" Nia demanded, a fresh wave of panic rising in her chest as she read the absolute terror on her mother's face. "Mom, you're scaring me. What's going on?"

Evelyn pulled out a chair and sat down heavily, staring blankly at the half-eaten food on the table. "Marcus didn't just sleep with you, Nia. He didn't just cheat on Maya with Chloe."

Nia frowned, her brow furrowing in confusion. "What are you talking about? What else could he possibly have done?"

"He took everything," Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking. "The house we're sitting in right now? It's gone. The bank is foreclosing. Your father's estate, the insurance money, the savings—Marcus used your power of attorney forms, Nia. He cleaned us out completely."

Nia froze. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking ghostly white. She stood up so fast her chair tipped backward, crashing loudly onto the hardwood floor.

"No," Nia gasped, shaking her head frantically. "No, that's impossible! He wouldn't... he couldn't do that. He loves me! He's the father of my child!"

"He loves no one, Nia!" Evelyn yelled, slamming her palm onto the table, finally breaking her composure. "Just like your father! They take everything they can, and they leave the women in this family to pick up the broken pieces!"

Before Nia could respond, the front door swung wide open. Maya stood in the doorway, holding a thick manila folder in her hand. Her face was set in a hard, dangerous line as she looked at both of them.

"Don't bother packing," Maya said coldly, holding up the folder. "I just talked to the bank. Marcus cleared out all my accounts, and he used Nia's signature to do it. But that's not the best part."

Maya stepped further into the house, her dark maroon top catching the light as she threw a stack of printed legal documents directly onto the center of the dining table.

"Marcus isn't even his real name."
