Chapter 13 - The Closing Circle

The flashing red and blue lights painted the wet tarmac in harsh, alternating strokes as three unmarked police cruisers slid to a halt, boxing in Marcus’s rental car from behind. Officers spilled out into the rain, shouting commands and drawing their service weapons with practiced efficiency.
"Don't move! Federal Marshals! Put your hands behind your back right now!"
Marcus froze, his hand hovering inches from the car door. He slowly turned around, raising his hands into the air as two officers rushed forward, slamming him face-first against the hood of the sedan. The click of handcuffs echoed sharply over the roar of the rain and the idling jet engine.
Maya stood back near her SUV, watching silently as the man who had systematically dismantled her life was caved in and patted down. Chloe walked up beside her, pulling her jacket tighter around her shoulders as she watched the arrest.
"It's over," Chloe whispered, her voice trembling slightly with a mix of relief and lingering shock. "He's actually caught."
"It's over for him," Maya agreed quietly, her gaze fixed on Marcus as he was shoved into the back of a cruiser. "But the mess he left behind is still ours to clean up."
One of the senior marshals walked over toward Maya and Chloe, holding a plastic evidence bag containing Marcus's phone and wallet.
"Are you Ms. Hayes?" the marshal asked, looking at Maya.
"Yes," she replied.
"We recovered several encrypted flash drives and hard copies of financial transfers on his person. It looks like he was moving assets into offshore accounts in real-time. Your bank will be able to initiate a freeze and recovery protocol by morning, but it's going to be a long legal battle."
"Thank you, Officer," Maya said, nodding politely.
As the police cruisers pulled away, escorting the transport vehicle back toward the city, Maya and Chloe stood alone in the vast, wet expanse of the airfield.
"What are you going to do now?" Chloe asked softly, looking at Maya.
"I'm going home," Maya said, turning back toward her SUV. "To my mother and my sister. Because despite everything... we still have to figure out how to survive what’s coming next."
An hour later, Maya and Chloe walked back through the front door of the family home. The house was dead silent. The half-eaten food on the dining room table remained untouched, a lingering monument to the exact moment their lives had shattered.
Evelyn and Nia were sitting together on the living room sofa. Nia was wrapped in a woolen blanket, staring blankly at the floor, while Evelyn held a warm mug of tea between her hands. They looked up as Maya and Chloe walked into the room.
"They got him," Maya announced simply, shaking the rain off her jacket.
Nia let out a long, shuddering breath, closing her eyes as tears slipped down her cheeks. "Thank God."
"The police recovered the digital records," Chloe added, stepping further into the room. "The bank should be able to freeze the accounts by morning. We might actually get the money back."
Evelyn set her mug down on the coffee table with a soft clink. She looked around the room, her expression heavy with a lifetime of accumulated regret.
"Getting the money back won't fix what broke in this house tonight, girls," Evelyn said softly. "The secrets we kept... the lies we let fester... that's the real damage."

Before anyone could reply, the house’s main circuit breaker clicked loudly, and every light in the house instantly flickered and died, plunging them into total darkness.
