Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Silence

The words hung in the air, dense and incomprehensible, refusing to settle. Maya’s hand remained frozen in the space above the table where she had slammed it moments before. Her chest heaved beneath her maroon top as her brain violently tried to compute what her mother had just whispered.
"What did you just say?" Maya’s voice was a dangerous, hollow whisper, stripped of all warmth.
Evelyn didn't meet her eyes. The older woman’s gray hair seemed to lose its luster under the warm dining room chandelier. Evelyn dropped her hands slowly from her mouth, letting them fall heavily against her olive green blouse. She looked at Marcus, who finally lifted his head, his face completely drained of color.
"I said what I said, Maya," Evelyn repeated, her voice cracking with a sorrow that went back decades. "Nia ain't the only one carrying a secret in this house."
Nia slowly straightened up from the table, her face wet with silent tears. She looked at her mother in sheer horror. "Mom, stop. Don't do this now."
"No, Nia. It's time," Evelyn insisted, her gaze locking onto Maya’s burning eyes. "You think this mess started tonight? You think betrayal is something new under this roof?"
Maya stepped back, her dark jeans scraping against the hardwood floor. She felt like a stranger in her own home, looking at the three people she loved most in the world, realizing they were all strangers to her. She looked at Marcus, who looked like a man standing on the edge of a cliff.
"So, what?" Maya asked, her voice shaking violently. "Marcus is running some kind of sick double shift? He’s with me for three years, and he’s sleeping with my sister too?"
"It’s not just about Marcus," Evelyn said softly, stepping closer to the table and reaching out a shaking hand toward Maya. "There’s history here, Maya. History you never bothered to look into."
Maya shook her head, backing away further until her lower back hit the sideboard. "Don't you dare put this on me. This is about infidelity. This is about my fiancé knocking up my sister!"
Marcus finally found his voice, a gravelly, broken sound. "Maya, let me explain. Please."
"Don't speak," Maya hissed, pointing a finger directly at his chest. "If you open your mouth again, I won't be responsible for what I do."
Evelyn took a deep, shuddering breath, her eyes filling with tears as she dropped a bombshell that shifted the foundation of Maya's entire identity.

"Marcus isn't the first man in this family to play both sides, Maya. Your father did the exact same thing to me."
