Chapter 1 - The First Fracture

The lingering scent of rosemary-roasted lamb and expensive Cabernet hung heavily in the dining room, masking the sudden, suffocating tension that had dropped over the table like a lead weight. Maya stood rigidly at the head of the reclaimed oak table, her long dark hair held back by a maroon headband that matched her fitted long-sleeve top. Her dark jeans felt stiff against her legs as she glared down at her sister, Nia, who was curled defensively over her stomach in the cream silk button-down shirt.
"Why you acting funny? You pregnant or something?" Maya demanded, her voice cutting through the heavy silence with a sharp, suspicious edge.
Nia didn't answer immediately. She squeezed her eyes shut, pressing her palms harder against her abdomen as if she could physically hold the rising tide of nausea and panic back inside her body.
Beside her, Marcus sat frozen. His short hair with neat braids was damp at the nape of his neck, and his black t-shirt clung to his chest as he stared intently down at the white ceramic plate half-filled with cold food, deliberately refusing to look up.
Maya watched the micro-expressions ripple across their faces—the microscopic flinch in Marcus’s jaw, the defensive hunch of Nia’s shoulders. A cold realization began to pool in the pit of Maya’s stomach, acid and sharp.
"Wait, who the daddy?" Maya asked, her voice dropping an octave, turning deadly quiet as she zeroed in on Marcus’s guilty posture.
Marcus kept his eyes glued to his plate, his silence screaming louder than any confession ever could.
Maya slammed her hand flat against the polished wood of the table, the sharp crack making the crystal wine glasses ring out in protest.
"Oh hell no!" Maya yelled, her voice breaking with fury as she rounded on Marcus. "You got my sister pregnant?!"
In the background, their mother, Evelyn, stood paralyzed behind the table. Her olive green blouse seemed to vibrate with her shock. Evelyn lifted her trembling hands to her face, her eyes wide with terror as she whispered, "Baby..."
Evelyn swallowed hard, looking between her two daughters before muttering a devastating truth that froze the air in the room.
