Chapter 11 - The Widening Circle

The intercom speaker hissed static into the quiet hallway as Chloe’s words echoed through the house. Maya stood frozen by the sideboard, her phone clutched tightly in her hand. The live video feed on her screen showed Chloe shivering under the porch light, her hospital scrubs soaked through with rain, her hands shaking as she held the manila envelope toward the camera lens.
"Open the door, Maya," Chloe repeated, her voice cracking with exhaustion and fear. "Please. We need to talk before he leaves the state."
Maya didn't hesitate. She walked briskly to the front door, turned the deadbolt, and pulled it open.
Chloe stumbled inward, shivering violently. Maya stepped aside, letting the other woman into the warm foyer before shutting the door firmly against the cold night wind. Chloe looked pale, her dark hair plastered to her forehead, her eyes wild with adrenaline.
"Are you okay?" Maya asked instinctively, setting aside her own anger for a fraction of a second as she looked at the pregnant nurse.
"I'm not okay," Chloe gasped, catching her breath. She held out the manila envelope. "After I left here, I called my brother. He works for the state police cyber unit. He ran Marcus's digital footprint through their active database. Marcus isn't just a con artist working solo. He's part of an entire syndicate."
From the dining room doorway, Evelyn stepped out, her olive green blouse wrinkled, her face etched with exhaustion. "A syndicate? What are you talking about?"
Chloe turned, startled to see Evelyn and Nia standing there, but she didn't waste time on pleasantries. She pulled a stack of printed papers out of the envelope and dropped them onto the entryway table.
"Look at this," Chloe urged, pointing a trembling finger at a photograph of a woman standing outside a suburban home holding a toddler. "Her name is Sarah. She lives thirty miles from here. She thinks Marcus is her devoted husband of four years. She’s currently seven months pregnant with his child."
Nia let out a choked gasp, clutching her own stomach as she stared at the photograph. "Another one? God in heaven... how many women are there?"
"At least four that the police have tracked so far across the region," Chloe said grimly, looking directly at Maya. "He targets women with stable jobs, family property, or accessible assets. He romances them, gets them pregnant so they're legally and emotionally tied to him, and then drains their finances using fabricated power-of-attorney documents."
Maya stared down at the photographs, feeling a cold numbness spread through her limbs. She thought of the last three years—the dinners, the vacations, the quiet mornings, the promises of a future. It had all been an elaborate, calculated performance.
"He's heading for the airport," Chloe added urgently, checking her phone. "My brother tracked his toll-tag pass ten minutes ago heading south on the interstate. He's trying to cross state lines before the arrest warrant is officially signed by the judge."
Maya looked up, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden, dangerous determination. She straightened the maroon top she wore, her posture hardening into steel.
"He's not making it out of the state," Maya said quietly.
Evelyn frowned, stepping closer. "Maya, what are you planning to do? Leave that to the police."
"The police are ten steps behind him, Mom," Maya replied, grabbing her car keys from the table. "They have warrants to file paperwork. I have a score to settle."
