Chapter 10 - The Locked Box

The dining room fell into a suffocating silence so deep that the ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway sounded like falling stones. Evelyn shrank back slightly in her chair, her olive green blouse tightening around her shoulders as she avoided Maya's piercing gaze.
"What are you talking about, Maya?" Evelyn asked, her voice dropping an octave, laced with a sudden, defensive tension. "What could your father possibly have found out about me?"
Maya held the battered leather notebook tightly against her chest, her knuckles turning white. She stepped closer to the table, looking down at her mother with a mixture of betrayal and disbelief.
"According to these notes, Mom, Dad didn't just suspect Marcus of being a con man," Maya read aloud, her voice trembling slightly. "He wrote that Marcus was introduced to our family through an introduction service... specifically recommended by a financial advisor named Arthur Vance."
Evelyn’s breath hitched. She pressed both hands flat against the table, her head snapping up. "Arthur was an old family friend. That means nothing."
"Arthur Vance died six years ago," Maya countered instantly, flipping the page. "And according to this report, Arthur didn't just recommend Marcus. He and Marcus shared a bank account in the Cayman Islands... a bank account that was co-signed by you, Mom."
Nia gasped, her hands dropping away from her face. She looked at Evelyn in utter horror. "Mom? What is Maya talking about? You knew Marcus before he met Maya?"
Evelyn closed her eyes tightly. She didn't deny it. The silence stretched out, heavy and condemning, filling the room with the toxic residue of decades of deception.
"Why?" Nia whispered, her voice breaking completely. "Why would you help bring that monster into our lives? You knew what he was!"
"I didn't know he was a criminal!" Evelyn snapped, opening her eyes, a fierce, desperate anger flashing in her gaze. She stood up, leaning over the table. "I thought... I thought he was just a man who could help us settle your father's massive debts! Your father left this estate on the brink of bankruptcy, Nia! The business failed years before he died, and he hid it all behind fake ledgers!"
Maya stared at her mother in disbelief. "So you brought a professional scammer into our lives to bail us out?"
"I was desperate!" Evelyn cried, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "The bank was going to take everything then, too! Arthur said Marcus could help us launder the remaining equity through a real estate flip. I didn't know he would target my daughters! I didn't know he would sleep with you both!"
The confession hung in the air like poison smoke. Nia buried her face in her arms again, sobbing hysterically, while Maya stood frozen, the maroon top she wore feeling heavier than lead.
"You invited the fox into the henhouse," Maya said coldly. "And now the whole thing is burned to the ground."
Before Evelyn could answer, the sharp, urgent buzzing of Maya's phone vibrated loudly against the wooden sideboard where she had left it. Maya walked over slowly, picked it up, and looked at the screen.
It wasn't a text. It was a live security camera notification from the front porch.
Maya tapped the screen, and the live feed popped up. Standing on the porch, drenched in the cold rain that had just begun to fall, was a figure holding a large manila envelope.
It wasn't Marcus. It was Chloe.
Maya stared at the screen, watching as Chloe pressed the doorbell once, then held up a second envelope directly to the camera lens, whispering something frantic into the microphone.
Maya hit the intercom button on her phone. "I can see you. What do you want?"
May you like
Chloe's voice crackled through the speaker, frantic and desperate. "Open the door, Maya. Marcus didn't just scam you and me. He has another family two towns over. And he just cleared out their accounts, too."
