Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guest

The heavy, rhythmic pounding on the front door froze everyone in their tracks. Maya’s hand hovered just inches from the brass handle. In the dining room behind her, Nia stopped crying, her breath hitching in her throat as she looked up with wide, terrified eyes. Marcus stood frozen by his chair, while Evelyn instinctively took a step back into the shadows of the hallway.
"Were you expecting someone?" Maya asked, turning slowly to face the room. Her dark eyes swept over the three of them, landing heavily on Marcus. "Is there another surprise waiting on the porch? Another woman? Another family?"
"No," Marcus said, shaking his head frantically. His voice was laced with genuine panic. "I swear to God, Maya, I didn't invite anyone over. Nobody knows I'm here except... well, nobody."
The knocking came again, louder this time, accompanied by the muffled sound of a woman's voice calling out from the porch.
"Open up! I know someone is in there! Marcus, your car is in the driveway, don't play with me!"
Maya felt a strange, cold calm wash over her. The shock was wearing off, replaced by a hyper-focused clarity. She looked at Marcus, whose face had gone completely gray. Without saying another word, Maya turned around, bypassed the living room, and strode straight to the front door.
"Maya, wait! Don't open it!" Evelyn cried out, rushing forward a few steps, her olive green blouse rustling with her desperate movement. "You don't know who that is! Just let it go!"
"Nothing left to hide, Mom," Maya replied coldly, her hand wrapping firmly around the brass knob. "Let's just get all the secrets out in the open tonight. Let's see how much dirt is really buried under this roof."
With a sharp twist, Maya pulled the heavy wooden door wide open.
Standing on the porch under the yellow glow of the exterior porch light was a stranger. She was a woman in her late twenties, wearing a heavy winter coat over a hospital scrubs uniform. Her hair was pulled back into a messy bun, and her face was flushed with anger and exhaustion. She looked past Maya instantly, her eyes locking onto Marcus in the hallway.
"Oh, so you're screening my calls now?" the woman snapped, taking a step inside the entryway without an invitation. "You left your stethoscope on my kitchen counter, Marcus. And more importantly, you left me five months pregnant with your child while you're out here playing happy family?"
The silence in the house became absolute. Maya slowly turned her head back to look at Marcus. Her expression was no longer angry. It was terrifyingly blank.
Marcus squeezed his eyes shut, leaning heavily against the dining room table as the floor seemed to drop out from beneath him.
"Five months?" Maya repeated softly, looking back at the nurse standing in her doorway. "Wait. My sister is four months along. So who is this one?"
The nurse stopped dead in her tracks, looking from Maya’s maroon top to Nia’s cream silk shirt, and finally to Marcus’s defeated posture.

"Wait," the nurse whispered, horror dawning in her eyes. "Who the hell are you?"
