Chapter 4 - The Ill-Timed Notification

The vibration of the phone against the polished wood sounded deafening in the heavy silence. Maya’s eyes snapped instantly to the glowing screen resting right beside Marcus’s untouched plate of food. The blue light illuminated the dark tabletop, casting long, eerie shadows across the remnants of their ruined dinner party.

Marcus made no move to touch it. He sat with his hands locked tightly between his knees, his shoulders hunched as if waiting for a physical blow.

"Aren't you going to get that?" Maya asked, her voice dangerously calm, devoid of all inflection. "It might be another one of your girlfriends. Or maybe it's just a reminder for your double life."

"Maya, leave it alone," Evelyn pleaded, wringing her hands together against the fabric of her olive green blouse. "Nothing on that phone is going to make this night any better."

"Oh, I think it will," Maya said, taking two slow, deliberate steps toward the table. Her dark maroon top caught the light of the chandelier, accentuating the rigid line of her posture. "In fact, I'm dying to know who else thinks they have a claim to my life."

Before Marcus could lunge across the table to grab it, Maya snatched the phone off the wood. The lock screen lit up her face, revealing a preview text from a contact saved only as The Accountant.

Did you transfer the down payment for the new house yet? Nia needs the nursery ready before her appointment next Tuesday.

Maya stared at the words, reading them once, twice, three times until they burned themselves into the back of her retinas. The room seemed to tilt on its axis. The house they were supposed to buy together. The life they were supposed to build. It was all a lie, funded by deception and executed with chilling precision.

"A house," Maya whispered, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edges of the device. She looked down at Marcus, her eyes wide, unblinking, and terrifyingly clear. "You two are buying a house together? With what money? My savings?"

Marcus finally stood up, pushing his chair back with a harsh screech against the hardwood floor. His tall frame hovered over the table, his braids falling slightly over his forehead. "Maya, listen to me. That was an investment. It wasn't what it looks like."

"Don't lie to my face!" Maya screamed, hurling the phone directly at his chest. It bounced off his black t-shirt and clattered loudly onto the floor, the screen cracking completely down the center. "You’re buying a nest for my sister with the money I saved up for our wedding? Are you out of your absolute mind?"

Nia burst into noisy, uncontrollable sobs, burying her face in her hands. "It wasn't supposed to go this far, Maya! It just... it happened!"

"Shut up!" Maya roared, turning on her heel to face her mother. "And you! You knew about this too? You knew they were playing house behind my back while I was working sixty-hour weeks to pay for our future?"

Evelyn stepped back, her face crumpling under the weight of her daughter's fury. "I tried to tell her to leave him. I told her it was wrong."

"But you didn't tell me," Maya whispered, her voice breaking as the betrayal cut deeper than she ever imagined possible. "Because in this family, protecting the secret is always more important than protecting each other."

Maya walked toward the front door, grabbing her jacket from the hook, but as she reached for the brass handle, a sharp knock echoed through the quiet house.
