Chapter 8 - The Sister's Secret

The damp, chilling air of the abandoned warehouse smelled heavily of rusted iron, old salt water, and rotting wood. Clara groaned softly, her head throbbing from the blow she had received outside the wedding venue. As her vision slowly focused in the dim, amber glow of a single dangling overhead bulb, the horrifying reality of her surroundings set in.

She was seated firmly in a wooden chair, her wrists bound tightly behind her back with coarse industrial zip-ties that bit into her delicate skin. Directly across from her, bound in a similar fashion, sat her younger sister, Maya. The digital clock sitting on a wooden crate between them glowed with an unforgiving red light, reading just twenty-four minutes remaining.

“Clara?!” Maya sobbed, her eyes wide with terror behind her gag, which had been temporarily loosened by one of their captors moments before. “Oh god, Clara, I’m so sorry! This is all my fault!”

Clara blinked rapidly, trying to clear the fog from her brain. “Maya, what are you talking about? None of this is your fault. Some monsters dragged us here.”

“No, you don’t understand!” Maya cried, fresh tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she struggled against her bonds. “I didn’t get kidnapped by accident. Three days ago... a man approached me. He said he had proof of Julian’s past—that Julian wasn't who he said he was. They blackmailed me, Clara! They said if I didn't help them plant the bug in Julian’s laptop, they would ruin our family. I tried to back out today, but they locked me in here instead!”

Clara felt as though the floor had dropped out from beneath her feet. The shock of the kidnapping, the wedding day poisoning, and now this devastating confession collided in her chest with crushing force.

“You... you helped them?” Clara whispered, her voice cracking with a mixture of heartbreak and disbelief. “Maya, what did you do?”

Before Maya could answer, the heavy steel sliding door of the warehouse groaned open with a loud, metallic screech. Heavy footsteps echoed across the concrete floor, growing closer by the second. Both sisters froze, turning their heads toward the sound as a tall figure emerged from the deep shadows, stepping into the dim light of the overhead bulb.

It wasn't a faceless goon or an anonymous henchman. It was a man wearing an expensive, tailored gray suit that seemed entirely out of place in the derelict warehouse—a man Clara recognized instantly from high-profile corporate charity galas.

It was Richard Vance, Julian’s former chief financial officer and the man who had supposedly disappeared overseas four years ago after a massive corporate embezzlement scandal.

“Well, well, well,” Richard said, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face as he adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. “Family reunions are always so terribly emotional. Welcome to the reckoning, Clara.”

Clara glared at him, her fear momentarily eclipsed by blinding fury. “Julian is coming for us. And when he gets here, you won’t walk out of this building alive.”

May you like

Richard laughed, a dry, mocking sound that echoed off the concrete walls. “Let’s hope so, my dear. Because Julian has a very heavy debt to pay, and I intend to collect it in full.”
