Chapter 15 - The Final Ledger

The cold steel barrel of the handgun caught the overhead lobby light as the elevator doors parted, framing Detective Miller standing calmly inside the car. Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his foot hovering over the polished marble floor. The betrayal hit him harder than any physical blow. Miller wasn't just a corrupt cop; he was the enforcement arm of the syndicate, the shadow that had covered up Richard’s tracks and orchestrated the entire wedding day trap.

“Going up, Julian?” Miller asked, his voice devoid of emotion as he stepped out of the elevator, keeping the weapon trained steadily on Julian’s chest. “Arthur sends his regards. He always hated loose ends, but he admired your tenacity.”

Julian stared at the detective, his breathing slow and controlled. The weight of his past choices finally settled fully onto his shoulders, but there was no fear left in him—only a cold, crystallized resolve. He took one deliberate step forward, ignoring the threat of the gun.

“Arthur is living in a ghost town of his own making,” Julian said, his voice echoing eerily across the empty, vaulted lobby. “And you’re just his dog, Miller. When the house of cards falls, you’ll be the one buried beneath the rubble.”
