Chapter 6 - The Trap Within the Trap

The cold, sharp bite of the steel blade pressing firmly against Clara’s spine froze her in her tracks. The roar of Julian’s car engine as it tore out of the parking lot faded instantly into a terrifying background hum. Clara’s breath caught in her throat, her eyes widening as she stared straight ahead at the ornate wrought-iron gates of the wedding venue.
“Don’t make a sound, bride,” a low, raspy whisper hissed directly into her ear, smelling faintly of stale cigarette smoke and cheap cologne. “Your groom thinks he’s playing the hero, running off to save the little sister. But he just walked right into the primary objective.”
Clara’s mind raced, adrenaline flooding her veins and sharpening her senses. She knew screaming would only alert the remaining wedding guests inside, putting dozens of innocent lives—including her elderly parents—at immediate risk. She had to remain calm. She had to survive.
“Who sent you?” Clara whispered back, her voice remarkably steady despite the terror gripping her heart. “Naomi is already in handcuffs. You can’t win this.”
The unseen captor gave a low, dark chuckle that vibrated uncomfortably against Clara’s back. “Naomi was just a pathetic pawn. A distraction to peel Julian away from his fortress. The people pulling the strings have history with your dear husband—history he tried to bury in blood five years ago.”
Before Clara could process the shocking revelation about Julian’s past, a heavy canvas bag was suddenly thrust violently over her head, plunging her into suffocating darkness. The world vanished into a muffled void of thick burlap and the sound of her own ragged breathing. Strong, calloused hands grabbed her by the arms, lifting her off her feet as she was dragged backward across the stone terrace, away from the safety of the glowing reception hall.
Inside the hall, the music finally ground to a halt, and the murmurs of confused guests began to rise as they realized the bride had vanished into the night. But no one heard the muffled gasp Clara let out as she was shoved roughly into the back of a waiting cargo van.
Miles away, Julian’s black sedan tore down the highway, the speedometer needle hovering dangerously near ninety miles per hour. His knuckles were white against the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the empty, winding road leading toward the industrial east side. His cell phone chimed relentlessly in the passenger seat, flashing an incoming text message from an unknown sender.
Julian glanced down for a fraction of a second, his heart freezing when he read the glowing words on the screen: “You left your bride unattended, Julian. Turn around now, or watch them both burn.”

Julian slammed his foot down harder on the accelerator, his tires screeching in protest as he realized the horrifying truth: Maya was a hostage, but Clara was the ultimate target.
