Chapter 5 - The Voice from the Shadows

The eerie, tinny melody of the music box ringtone cut through the quiet night air on the terrace, sounding deeply out of place against the backdrop of their ruined wedding day. Clara stared at Julian’s phone as if it were a venomous snake about to strike. The screen flashed relentlessly, displaying an encrypted VoIP number with no geographic origin.
Julian took a slow, deliberate breath, steadying his nerves before pressing the accept button and bringing the device slowly to his ear. He did not speak, choosing instead to let the caller reveal their hand first, a tactical silence born from years of corporate crisis management and a dark past he had fought desperately to leave behind.
“Hello, Julian,” a raspy, modulated voice crackled through the speaker, distorted by heavy electronic filters to hide the speaker’s true identity. “I trust you received my wedding gift. The little sister looks charming in red, doesn’t she?”
Julian’s jaw clenched so hard his back teeth ached. He stepped away from Clara, keeping his back to her so she wouldn’t have to hear the full depravity of the voice on the other end.
“State your terms,” Julian replied, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all warmth. “Whatever you want, it’s between you and me. Leave Clara and Maya out of this.”
A harsh, mechanical laugh echoed through the phone line. “Oh, no, Julian. You don’t get to separate yourself from your sins so easily. You built your entire new life on a mountain of lies, and now the bill has finally come due. You have exactly forty-two minutes to reach the abandoned rail yard on the east side of the city.”
“That’s a thirty-minute drive on a good night,” Julian argued sharply, calculating the distance and the gridlocked traffic caused by the weekend festivities. “Even with sirens, I can’t—.”
“Then you better run fast, my friend,” the caller interrupted coldly. “Because if you bring the police, or if you fail to arrive alone before the timer hits zero, Maya’s oxygen supply in that sealed vault will be permanently cut off. Tick-tock, Julian.”
The line went dead with a sharp click.
Julian lowered the phone slowly from his ear, his mind racing through every possible route, every tactical advantage, and every enemy he had made during his rise to corporate prominence. He turned back to face Clara, who was watching him with a mixture of terror and desperate hope.
“Who was it, Julian? What did they say?” Clara demanded, grabbing the lapels of his jacket.
“They want me. At the old east-side rail yard,” Julian said, his voice grim as he began shedding his suit jacket and rolling up his white shirt sleeves to prepare for whatever violence awaited him in the dark.
“I’m coming with you,” Clara declared instantly, her voice firm and unwavering, defying the tears still streaming down her face.
“No,” Julian said fiercely. “It’s a trap designed to draw me out. If you come, we both die, and Maya has no chance.”
Julian leaned down and pressed a quick, hard kiss to Clara’s forehead, before turning and sprinting toward his car parked at the edge of the venue.

Clara watched him go, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs, but as his car peeled out of the lot, a shadow detached itself from the pillar behind her, pressing a cold, steel blade directly against her spine.
