Chapter 4 - The Ticking Clock

The cold autumn wind whipped across the stone terrace, rustling the heavy silk of Julian’s suit jacket as he stared down at the photograph in his trembling hand. Sixty minutes. The red digital numbers on the clock in the picture meant that somewhere in the sprawling city, Maya’s life was slipping away by the second. Julian’s mind raced backward, connecting the terrifying dots. Naomi had never acted alone. The poison at the reception was merely a distraction, a cruel opening act designed to keep him and Clara occupied inside the hall while the real trap was sprung.

“Julian! What is it? What’s in that envelope?” Clara’s voice called out from behind him.

She had followed him out onto the terrace, her white wedding dress trailing gracefully over the cobblestones, though her face was now entirely drained of color. She saw the stiffness in her new husband’s shoulders and the grim set of his jaw, and she knew instinctively that her worst nightmare had just begun.

Julian spun around, quickly slipping the photograph behind his back, though he knew it was already too late to shield her from the brutal truth.

“Clara, you need to stay inside with your father. Lock the doors and don’t let anyone—anyone at all—approach the venue,” Julian instructed, his tone fiercely protective yet strained with urgency.

“Don’t treat me like a child, Julian!” Clara demanded, stepping closer and reaching out to grab his wrist. Her fingers brushed the edge of the photograph, and she managed to yank it from his grip before he could pull away.

The breath caught in Clara’s throat as her eyes locked onto the image of her little sister bound and gagged in the damp darkness. A choked, heartbreaking sob escaped her lips, and her knees buckled, but Julian caught her by the waist before she could hit the ground.

“Maya…” Clara whispered, her voice breaking into a jagged cry. “Oh god, Maya. Who did this? How long do we have?”

“Less than fifty minutes now,” Julian said grimly, looking down at his wristwatch, where the glowing seconds ticked away with agonizing cruelty.

“We have to call the police right now!” Clara urged, pulling her phone from her bridal clutch with shaking fingers, frantically tapping the screen.

Julian gently placed his hand over the phone, pressing it down to stop her dialing. He looked her straight in the eyes, his expression dark and resolute.

“The police won’t make it in time, Clara,” Julian said softly. “The note on the back of the photo didn't just have a countdown. It had an address, and a specific set of instructions meant for me, and me alone.”

Clara stared at him in sheer disbelief, her tears freezing on her cheeks. “What kind of instructions?”

Before Julian could answer, his cell phone began to vibrate violently in his breast pocket, displaying an unknown caller ID with a harsh, pre-recorded ringtone that played the haunting melody of a music box.
