Chapter 3 - The Broken Alibi

The frantic bridesmaid, clutching a ruined bouquet of white roses, rushed toward the head table with wild, frantic eyes. The wedding hall, already stunned by Naomi’s abrupt arrest, fell into an absolute, suffocating silence as the heavy oak doors banged shut behind her. All eyes shifted from the weeping, handcuffed ex-girlfriend to the pale, trembling young woman who had just interrupted the reception.

“Julian! Clara!” the bridesmaid gasped, struggling to catch her breath as she leaned against the edge of the nearest guest table for support. “You need to come outside right now. The security gates—they’ve been chained shut from the outside!”

Clara gasped, pressing a trembling hand to her mouth, while Julian’s eyes narrowed with sudden, sharp suspicion. He stood up slowly from the table, his tall frame blocking Naomi from view as the paramedics finally arrived to administer an antidote for the poison pulsing through the red-head’s veins.

“Who locked the gates?” Julian demanded, his voice cutting through the murmurs of the panicked crowd like a blade.

“I don’t know!” the bridesmaid cried, tears finally spilling over her mascara-stained cheeks. “I went out to the courtyard to grab my forgotten purse from the car, and a black van tore out of the parking lot. When I tried to open the pedestrian gate, heavy industrial chains and padlocks were wrapped around the bars. There’s a note taped to the ironwork.”

Julian stepped away from the head table, leaving Clara in the protective custody of her father, who had rushed over from the family table. Julian strode briskly down the center aisle, ignoring the alarmed whispers of their guests, and pushed open the heavy glass side doors leading directly out to the manicured garden terrace. The night air was cool and crisp, carrying the distant scent of pine and exhaust.

He walked quickly across the stone patio toward the wrought-iron perimeter fence. Sure enough, a thick steel chain was looped through the bars, secured by a heavy brass padlock that gleamed under the security lights. Taped directly to the cold metal was a plain white envelope bearing a single word written in harsh, black marker.

Julian reached out with steady fingers, peeling the envelope away from the chain. He slid open the flap and pulled out a single photograph, his heart dropping into his stomach as he recognized the haunting image instantly.

It was a picture of Clara’s younger sister, Maya, tied tightly to a chair in an unfamiliar, windowless basement, with a digital clock glowing red in the background, currently counting down from precisely sixty minutes.
