Chapter 1 - The Exchange of Venom

The crystal chandelier above the head table cast a brilliant, merciless light over the white tablecloth, illuminating the delicate, beaded lace of Clara’s wedding dress and the dark wool of Julian’s tailored suit. Beside Julian sat Naomi, her long red hair catching the amber glow of the reception hall, her expression a mask of manufactured joy. No one at the packed tables surrounding them noticed the clinical precision of Naomi’s movements beneath the linen drape. With a practiced, steady hand that had once held Julian’s arm with genuine affection, she extracted a heavy, pharmaceutical-grade syringe from her sequined purse. The barrel was filled with a thick, ominous red concentrate—a tasteless, fast-acting paralytic compound she had spent months acquiring.
“Sabotage,” Naomi whispered under her breath, her lips barely parting as she depressed the plunger, injecting the viscous liquid directly into the glass of deep red Cabernet Sauvignon sitting closest to the bride.
Julian caught the motion out of the corner of his eye. His breath hitched in his throat, and the warm blood rushed violently from his face, leaving him pale and rigid. Without a second wasted, his hand darted across the table with the speed of a striking snake, seamlessly swapping the poisoned glass with the untouched one positioned directly in front of Naomi.
Clara leaned against Julian’s shoulder, her face radiant with innocent joy, completely unaware of the deadly micro-drama unfolding inches from her cheek. She lifted the swapped glass to her lips, smiling warmly at the cheering crowd of family and friends.
“Cheers,” Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, laced with a terrifying, frozen gravity as he stared directly into Naomi’s widening eyes.
Naomi lifted her glass, still smiling for the cameras, and took a long, thirsty swallow. A heartbeat later, her eyes went wide, her posture stiffening as the foul, metallic poison burned her throat. She slammed the glass down, coughing violently and clutching her chest.
“Disgusting,” she choked out, her face twisting in utter horror.

Clara looked over, concerned, but before she could ask if her former friend was alright, a heavy pair of silver handcuffs suddenly locked tightly around Naomi’s wrists, clicking shut with a sharp, echoing snap.
