Chapter 2 - The Sinking Foundation

The sudden metallic snap of the handcuffs echoed strangely against the celebratory clatter of silverware and polite chatter from the surrounding tables. Several guests closest to the bridal platform turned their heads, their smiles faltering as they processed the grim scene unfolding in the center of the reception. Naomi sat frozen in her chair, her cough instantly silenced by the sheer terror gripping her chest as the cold steel bit into her skin. Two uniformed police officers, summoned discreetly minutes earlier by the venue manager who had been monitoring the security feeds from a back office, stood firmly behind her chair.

“Naomi Vance, you are under arrest for attempted poisoning,” the lead officer stated with a low, authoritative voice that brooked no argument.

Naomi’s red hair tumbled forward as her head snapped toward Julian, her eyes blazing with absolute betrayal and unbridled fury. The paralytic compound she had meant for Clara was already beginning to affect her own nervous system, making her limbs feel heavy and uncoordinated. She tried to stand, but her legs refused to support her weight, forcing her to grip the edge of the mahogany table with white knuckles.

“You did this,” Naomi hissed, her voice a venomous whisper meant only for Julian’s ears. “You switched the glasses. You watched me drink it.”

Julian did not flinch. He kept his arm securely around Clara’s waist, feeling the gentle rise and fall of his new bride’s chest as she finally grasped the gravity of the situation. Clara pulled back, her blue eyes wide with shock as she looked from the handcuffs to Naomi, and finally to her husband’s grim profile.

“Julian? What is she talking about?” Clara asked, her voice trembling slightly as the festive atmosphere evaporated completely.

Julian turned to look at his wife, his expression softening just a fraction, though the shadows beneath his eyes revealed the immense burden of the secret he had carried for months. He had known Naomi was unstable, but he had never imagined she would cross this fatal line on their wedding day.

“It’s over, Clara,” Julian said softly, kissing the top of her blonde head. “She tried to hurt you. I had to protect us.”

Before Clara could demand a full explanation of the horrifying events, a sharp, piercing shriek tore through the quiet hall, coming not from the handcuffed ex-girlfriend, but from the main entrance where a breathless bridesmaid burst through the double doors.
