Chapter 8 - The Sealed Envelope

Robert Sterling’s hands trembled as he held the birth certificate up to the harsh overhead light, examining the embossed state seals and the distinctive signature of the chief medical officer from Portland General Hospital. The auditorium fell into a profound, suffocating silence, every eye fixed on the aging executive as he read the DNA confirmation report attached to the back.
"Well, Robert?" Marcus snapped, his voice losing its polished composure as panic leaked through the cracks. "Read it out loud so everyone can hear what kind of amateur forgery this girl cooked up in some back alley."
Sterling looked up slowly, taking off his gold-rimmed glasses and wiping them with a silk handkerchief. "It's not a forgery, Marcus. The serial numbers match the archived vault records from nineteen-hundred and ninety-eight. The thumbprint on the trust activation clause matches Eleanor's DNA markers registered with the state medical board."
A collective gasp rippled through the tiered rows of the board. Whispers exploded into heated debates as directors realized the entire power structure of Vanguard Global Enterprises had shifted in a single afternoon.
"This is absurd!" Marcus shouted, slamming his palms onto the table and knocking over a crystal water pitcher. Shards of glass shattered across the floor, water spilling across the mahogany surface like a spreading stain. "She’s a fraud! We don't even know where she’s been for the past twenty-two years! For all we know, she’s a criminal hired by our competitors to dismantle our operations from the inside!"
"The only criminal in this room is the man who embezzled twelve million dollars from the foundation accounts to fund his offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands," Mei-Ling said, stepping right up to Marcus until they were only inches apart.
Marcus flinched, his eyes widening in genuine terror as he realized how much she knew. "You're lying. You have no proof of that."
"I don't need proof yet," Mei-Ling whispered coldly, holding his terrified gaze. "Because the federal auditors are already downstairs reviewing your terminal logs."
Before Marcus could formulate a response, the heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium swung open with a loud bang. Three men in dark suits bearing federal insignia walked briskly down the central aisle, holding official documentation folders.

"Marcus Vance?" the lead federal agent asked loudly, stopping right at the edge of the dais. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and obstruction of justice."
