Chapter 12 - The Shadow in the Alley

The voice on the other end of the burner phone crackled with cold fury. "The girl thinks she's safe because she has the board behind her. She doesn't realize the real power in this city doesn't sit in glass towers; it lives in the dark."
In the alleyway, the man in the trench coat—Viktor, Marcus Vance’s primary fixer and head of private security details—smirked as he watched the paramedics lead Mr. and Mrs. Chen toward the Vance security van for safe relocation.
"The police are taking Marcus in," Viktor muttered, keeping his voice low as he stepped deeper into the shadows. "If the girl starts auditing the offshore shell accounts, everything we built over the past five years will come crashing down."
"Then don't let her audit anything," the voice commanded through the static. "Use the contingency protocol. If the Vance family wants their empire back so badly, let them inherit a smoking ruin."
Viktor clicked the phone shut, slipping it into his pocket as he walked out toward his unmarked sedan parked near the corner. He had one final card to play, a trump card that Marcus didn't even know existed—access to the primary mainframe server of Vanguard Global, currently vulnerable while the board was distracted by the family reunion in Tacoma.
Back across the street, Mei-Ling helped her parents settle into the back of the armored Vance vehicle, ensuring they were surrounded by trusted medical professionals before turning around to face Eleanor, who was standing by the car door leaning on her cane.
"They're safe," Mei-Ling said, letting out a breath that felt like it had been trapped in her lungs for hours. "Thank you. If your security team hadn't arrived when they did..."
"They are part of this family now, Mei-Ling," Eleanor interrupted gently, placing a hand over Mei-Ling's clenched fist. "And family protects their own. But our battle tonight isn't over yet."
Mei-Ling frowned, noticing the grim expression on the older woman's face. "What do you mean? Marcus is arrested, the board voted with us, and my parents are safe."
"Marcus was just the front man," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a grave whisper. "He was greedy, reckless, and easy to manipulate. But someone taught him how to set up those offshore shell accounts. Someone inside the inner circle who knows our security protocols better than anyone."
Mei-Ling's blood ran cold. "Who?"
"Viktor," Eleanor stated, her eyes scanning the dark street corners. "My former head of security. He disappeared ten minutes before the board meeting started."
Before Mei-Ling could respond, her phone buzzed again. It wasn't a text message this time; it was an automated high-priority alert from the Vanguard Global corporate cybersecurity system.
