Chapter 4 - The Intruder in the Den

Marcus stepped fully into the room, the crisp scent of cedarwood cologne filling the air. His eyes lingered on Mei-Ling, taking in the beige uniform with its brown trim, the severe dark hair, and the way she stood tall despite her working-class attire. A flicker of subtle recognition crossed his features before he masked it with a patronizing smile.

"Ah, the janitorial staff," Marcus said smoothly, his voice dripping with condescension. "Did you drop something down here, young lady? Or is my dear aunt paying you extra to listen to her fairy tales about a lost cousin?"

Mei-Ling didn't shrink away as she would have an hour ago. Instead, she let her fingers curl tightly around the jade pendant hidden safely inside her pocket. "I was just finishing up my duties, Mr. Vance."

"Well, your shift is over," Marcus snapped, turning his back on her to address Eleanor directly. "Auntie, the emergency board session starts in five minutes. If you aren't in your seat to cast your proxy vote on the Asian expansion project, we will invoke clause twelve of the corporate bylaws. You will be stripped of your executive authority due to medical incapacity."

"You are in a terrible hurry to sign away assets that don't belong to you, Marcus," Eleanor said calmly, leaning heavily on her cane as she stepped between him and Mei-Ling. "Perhaps you're afraid of what might be discovered in the upcoming audit."

Marcus's smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his jaw tightening visibly. "Audits are routine, Auntie. You know as well as I do that modernizing our logistics requires liquidating non-performing legacy holdings. Sentimentality is bankrupting this company."

"Like the legacy of my parents?" Mei-Ling spoke up, her voice clear and steady, cutting through the tense atmosphere like a razor.

Marcus turned back around, narrowing his eyes as he looked closely at Mei-Ling for the first time. "What did you say?"

"I said, sentimentality can be a powerful thing," Mei-Ling repeated, stepping forward into the light. "Especially when someone tries to steal it."

"Who do you think you're talking to?" Marcus took a threatening step forward, his temper flaring through his polished exterior. "You're a floor cleaner. Speak out of turn again, and I’ll have the building security drag you out the loading dock before you can collect your hourly wage."

"Try it," Mei-Ling challenged, her chin lifting defiantly. "And let's see how quickly the board questions why the executive vice president is so eager to fire staff who witness private conversations."

Eleanor watched the exchange with a quiet, approving smile, her fingers tightening around the emerald brooch on her lapel. Marcus’s face darkened with genuine rage, his manicured hands clenching into fists at his sides.

"You're playing a dangerous game, old woman," Marcus hissed at Eleanor, ignoring Mei-Ling entirely now. "You brought a street rat into the Vance tower, and you think it makes you look strong? When I take over this company, I'll make sure every penny of the foundation funds is redirected to my offshore accounts."

Marcus turned on his heel and stormed out of the room, slamming the heavy oak doors behind him with a thunderous crash. The silence that followed was deafening.
