Chapter 6 - The Threat in the Dark

Mei-Ling froze in the center of the private hallway, the glowing screen burning into her retinas. The small, modest bakery in the working-class district of Tacoma where her adoptive parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chen, spent fourteen hours a day kneading dough and baking steamed buns was everything to her. They had given her a home, education, and unconditional love when she was just a nameless infant left on a doorstep.

"What is it, my child?" Eleanor asked, noticing the sudden pallor in Mei-Ling's complexion as she slowed her pace.

Mei-Ling quickly locked her phone and shoved it deep into her pocket, forcing her breathing to remain even. "Nothing. Just spam. Let's keep moving."

"You can't hide things from me, Mei-Ling," Eleanor said softly, stopping by the elevator call button. "I spent twenty-two years reading every shadow of suspicion. If Marcus is threatening someone you care about, we need to know immediately."

"It's Marcus," Mei-Ling admitted, her voice tight with suppressed panic. "He knows about the Chens. He knows about the bakery in Tacoma. If we go into that meeting and challenge him, he's going to destroy them."

"Marcus doesn't have the power to destroy anyone unless we let him," Eleanor said, pressing the elevator button with the tip of her cane. "He’s bluffing. Desperate men always threaten what they think you love most when they realize their own empire is crumbling beneath their feet."

"It's not a bluff," Mei-Ling said, her eyes flashing with fierce loyalty. "You don't know him. I've watched men like Marcus from the bottom of this building for three years. They don't care about collateral damage. My parents are innocent people who don't even know I'm a Vance."

"Then we protect them," Eleanor stated firmly as the elevator doors slid open silently, revealing a mirrored interior that reflected their determined expressions. "Once you are officially seated as the primary shareholder, Marcus's authority is legally frozen. He won't have the corporate funds or the legal standing to touch a hair on their heads."

Mei-Ling stepped into the elevator, her mind racing. The risk was enormous, but backing down now meant surrendering not only her own identity but also the safety of the people who had raised her. As the doors closed, cutting them off from the hallway, the digital floor indicator began its rapid descent toward the main auditorium on the tenth floor.

"If anything happens to them..." Mei-Ling started, her voice trailing off.

"It won't," Eleanor interrupted, taking Mei-Ling's hand and squeezing it tightly. "Because today, the Vance family takes back what is theirs."

The elevator chimed softly, and the doors slid open to reveal the cavernous, glass-domed auditorium. Fifty members of the board of directors sat in tiered rows around a massive circular oak table. At the center sat Marcus, looking calm, collected, and utterly victorious as he prepared to call the meeting to order.

As Mei-Ling and Eleanor walked down the central aisle, every head in the room turned toward them in stunned silence. Marcus looked up, his smile vanishing instantly as he spotted the jade pendant resting against Mei-Ling's black turtleneck.
