Chapter 1 - The Shattered Silence

The pristine marble lobby of the Vanguard Global Tower echoed with the sharp click of expensive heels and the dull thud of plastic bottles hitting the floor. Mei-Ling knelt by the planters, her beige janitorial uniform with its stiff brown trim straining slightly across her shoulders as she scooped up the careless litter left behind by corporate executives. Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe, practical bun, completely hiding the delicate bone structure that once graced society magazines. She kept her eyes lowered, practicing the absolute invisibility required of someone working the lowest rung of the corporate ladder in downtown Seattle.
Near the elevator bank, an elegant older woman in a tailored emerald green suit froze mid-step. Madam Eleanor Vance clutched her carved wooden walking cane, her pearl necklace trembling against her collarbone. Her emerald brooch caught the harsh fluorescent light, flashing green fire as her breath hitched in her throat. Tears welled instantly in her eyes, hot and sudden, tracking down skin that had known decades of wealth and sorrow.
Mei-Ling tossed the last bottle into her rolling bin and stood up, dusting off her knees. She turned to wheel the cart away, only to find the impeccably dressed matriarch blocking her path.
"My daughter…" Eleanor choked out, the words tearing from her throat with a raw, desperate agony that made nearby brokers stop and stare.
Mei-Ling stepped back, her face hardening behind a professional mask. "Ma'am, you have the wrong person. I'm just a custodian."
"Don't lie to me!" Eleanor sobbed, dropping her cane as she rushed forward, closing the distance with frantic energy. "I would know those eyes anywhere. Twenty-two years I’ve searched for you!"
"Step back, please," Mei-Ling said sharply, her voice rising to cut through the gathering silence of the lobby. "People are watching. You are making a scene, and I am trying to do my job. I don't know you."
"You do know me," Eleanor pleaded, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she reached into the heavy velvet pocket of her green suit. "Look at this. Look at the jade."

Eleanor pulled out a heavy silver chain supporting an intricate jade Buddha pendant flanked by glowing emeralds and a diamond bail. The room seemed to drop ten degrees as the familiar carving caught the light. Mei-Ling gasped, her professional composure instantly shattering as she stared down at the exact twin of the pendant hidden deep inside her own uniform pocket.
