Chapter 13 - The Master Override

The glowing screen of Mei-Ling's phone flashed red as the corporate security alert scrolled continuous lines of warning text. Terminal zero-one was located deep within the sub-basement bunker of the Vanguard Global Tower—a high-security server room that could only be accessed using a biometric retinal scan combined with a physical master key.

"Viktor," Mei-Ling breathed, staring at the screen in horror. "He's in the mainframe. He's wiping the financial records before the federal auditors can access them."

"If he wipes those servers, we lose every trace of the embezzled funds," Eleanor said, her voice sharp with urgent panic. "Marcus will walk free on a technicality within forty-eight hours, and the board will claim we staged a coup using forged documents."

"We have to go back," Mei-Ling said, turning toward the armored Lincoln Navigator. "Now."

The driver, a heavily armed corporate security specialist named Miller, stepped out of the front seat, overhearing their conversation. "Madam Vance, Miss Mei-Ling, returning to the tower tonight is dangerous. Viktor has access to all internal security lockouts. He could trap us in the sub-basement."

"If we stay here, we lose everything anyway," Mei-Ling countered, her voice carrying the absolute authority of a true Vance heir. "Drive us back to downtown Seattle. Step on it."

Within seconds, the Navigator was cutting through the night once more, its tires squealing as it sped back toward the gleaming Vanguard Global Tower. The city skyline loomed ahead, dark and imposing against the cloudy night sky, with only a single window glowing faintly on the forty-fifth floor—and another deep underground in the reinforced bunker.

As the vehicle sped down the empty highway, Mei-Ling pulled the jade pendant out from under her black turtleneck, letting the cool stone rest between her fingers. Her thoughts raced back to the morning when she had been picking up plastic bottles in the lobby, invisible to the world. In less than twelve hours, her entire existence had been ripped apart and rebuilt into something terrifyingly powerful.

"Mei-Ling," Eleanor said softly, breaking the tense silence in the backseat. "When we reach the tower, Viktor will be expecting us to take the main elevator. He knows every camera angle in that building."

"Then we don't use the elevators," Mei-Ling replied, her eyes narrowing as a memory of her three years working as a custodian flashed through her mind. "When I was cleaning the service tunnels, I found an old, unmapped maintenance lift behind the freight docks. It connects directly to the sub-basement ventilation shaft."

Eleanor stared at her granddaughter with a mixture of shock and profound admiration. "You know the building better than the head of security."

"When you're invisible," Mei-Ling said quietly, "you learn to look at the places everyone else ignores."

The Navigator screeched to a halt in the subterranean loading bay of the Vanguard Global Tower ten minutes later. The lights in the cavernous garage were flickering ominously, casting long, dancing shadows across the concrete pillars. Miller drew his sidearm, checking the magazine with a sharp click as he opened the door for them.

"Stay behind me," Miller instructed, leading them toward the rusted iron service door tucked away behind the industrial trash compactors.

Mei-Ling pushed past him, grabbing the heavy iron handle and pulling it open. The dark, damp stairwell yawned before them like a monster's mouth. As they descended into the gloom, a sudden, deafening explosion echoed through the concrete walls from deep below.
