Chapter 14 - Into the Abyss

The shockwave of the explosion rattled the metal handrails beneath Mei-Ling’s palms, sending a fine cloud of concrete dust cascading down from the ceiling. Miller immediately raised his weapon, shielding Eleanor behind his broad frame as they pushed through the smoke-filled stairwell landing.
"Stay back!" Miller barked, his flashlight cutting a sharp beam through the swirling grey fog. "That came from the sub-basement server core!"
"Viktor is destroying the physical drives," Mei-Ling coughed, waving a hand in front of her face to clear the acrid smoke. "He knows we're coming, and he's burning the evidence."
"We have to stop him before the backup generators fail and the vault seals permanently," Eleanor urged, leaning heavily on her cane as she pushed herself forward with surprising strength.
They reached the heavy steel blast door leading into the sub-basement mainframe. The electronic keypad was sparking violently, sending blue electrical arcs dancing across the reinforced frame. The heavy titanium bolts were halfway engaged, grinding against each other as the automated lockdown protocol fought with the manual override code.
Through the thick wire-reinforced glass window of the blast door, Mei-Ling could see Viktor standing inside the server room. He was smashing the primary hard drives with a heavy iron crowbar, his face drenched in sweat under the flashing red emergency lights.
"Viktor! Stop right there!" Miller shouted, aiming his weapon through the smashed security slot in the door.
Viktor paused, turning around slowly. A twisted, desperate grin spread across his face as he held up a small, blinking remote detonator in his left hand.
"You're too late, little janitor," Viktor laughed maniacally, his voice echoing through the intercom system. "The primary drives are ash, and the secondary backups are routing the funds to an account that doesn't exist anymore. The Vance empire is bankrupt!"
"Drop the detonator, Viktor," Mei-Ling said, stepping right up to the glass window, her voice completely devoid of fear. "You're not just fighting the board anymore. You're fighting the person who owns this building."
"You think a piece of jade makes you a billionaire?" Viktor sneered, his thumb resting heavily on the red button of the detonator. "You're still just a girl scrubbing floors."
Before Viktor could depress the trigger, Mei-Ling didn't hesitate. She reached down, grabbed a heavy steel pipe left behind by maintenance contractors near the wall, and swung it with all her strength against the weakened electronic lock mechanism of the blast door.

With a deafening crash, the sparking keypad shattered into a thousand pieces, and the massive titanium bolts slid back with a heavy mechanical thud.
