Chapter 8 - The Underground Escape

The heavy vestry door slammed shut behind Julian, instantly muffling the hysterical screams of the remaining wedding guests and the frantic orders of Richard Sinclair, who was already screaming into his phone for corporate security reinforcements. The private corridor was dim, lit only by flickering emergency exit signs casting long, eerie red shadows across the concrete floor.
"Clara!" Julian called out in a harsh, urgent whisper, jogging quickly down the long hallway toward the service stairwell.
A faint, muffled sob echoed from the shadows near the utility closets. Julian skidded to a halt, his heart hammering against his ribs as he peered around the heavy metal corner. Clara was huddled in a tight ball beside a large industrial water heater, her dusty blue dress stained with soot and her face buried in her knees. She was still holding the infant wrapped tightly in the pink blanket, rocking back and forth with rhythmic desperation.
"Clara," Julian breathed out in relief, dropping quickly to his knees beside her. "Hey, look at me. You're safe. The bad men are gone."
Clara lifted her tear-streaked face, her big eyes wide with lingering terror. She slowly extended her small, trembling hands, holding out the infant. "He wouldn't stop crying, Daddy. I think he's hungry."
Julian carefully reached out, his strong, calloused hands gently taking the tiny bundle. As he peeled back a corner of the pink blanket, his breath hitched in his throat. The baby’s face was soft and peaceful, fast asleep despite the violent chaos that had just unfolded upstairs. But it was the tiny, perfectly formed birthmark just behind the infant’s left ear—a faint crescent-shaped cluster of freckles identical to the one Julian and his brother Thomas shared—that shattered any remaining doubt.
"He's real," Julian whispered, a rare, choked emotion tightening his throat as a single tear escaped his eye and tracked down his bruised cheek. "He's really Thomas's son."
"Mom told me before she passed away in the cabin," Clara whispered, wiping her nose with the back of her dirty sleeve. "She said grandfather found out we were hiding in the mountains. She said he sent men to take the baby because the baby is the rightful heir to everything, not you."
Julian gently cradled his nephew against his chest, his mind racing through the terrifying implications. If Arthur Vance knew about the child’s existence, every safehouse, bank account, and private transport network tied to the Vance name was instantly compromised. They couldn't go back to Julian’s penthouse, and they couldn't trust the local authorities, who were all deeply indebted to the old man's massive corporate conglomerate.
"We need to move, Clara," Julian said firmly, standing up and tucking the baby securely into the inner pocket of his dress shirt. "My grandfather's men will lock down the city by morning. We have to get to the old airstrip."
Suddenly, the heavy metal door at the end of the corridor clicked open, and the sound of heavy footsteps echoing down the concrete stairs shattered the brief silence.

"They're coming!" Clara gasped, grabbing Julian’s hand with desperate strength.
