Chapter 13 - The Resurrection of Thomas Vance

The stale air of the abandoned control room felt suddenly thick and suffocating as Julian stared in absolute disbelief at his older brother. The man standing before him was supposed to be resting at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, a tragic casualty of a corporate purge executed by their ruthless grandfather six long years ago. Yet here Thomas stood, breathing, scarred, and holding his terrified daughter with fierce, protective devotion.
"You... you survived the explosion," Julian whispered, his voice trembling as he stepped forward and gripped Thomas’s leather-clad shoulder, feeling the solid warmth of living muscle and bone beneath his palm. "Grandfather showed us the wreckage. The coast guard recovered your signet ring from the burned-out hull."
Thomas let out a bitter, humorless laugh, tossing a heavy, soot-stained signet ring onto the steel workbench beside the wrench. It clinked sharply against the metal.
"I left the ring behind on purpose," Thomas said, his voice hard as flint. "It was the only way the old man would stop hunting me long enough for me to disappear into the underground networks. I found out the truth about our mother’s death, Julian. It wasn't an accident. Grandfather orchestrated her brakes failing because she threatened to expose the corporate slush funds. The moment I started asking questions, my yacht became a floating bomb."
Clara buried her face deeper into Thomas’s jacket, while the infant in Julian’s arms stirred softly, letting out a gentle yawn that contrasted surrealally with the dark gravity of the conversation.
"And the baby?" Julian asked, his voice barely above a whisper as he looked down at the tiny face resting against his chest. "Leo... he's yours?"
"He's the rightful firstborn heir to the entire Vance conglomerate," Thomas nodded grimly. "Under the original charter drafted by our great-grandfather, the primary shares pass exclusively to the firstborn son of the direct bloodline, bypassing the board entirely. That’s why Arthur has spent the last decade trying to eliminate my branch of the family. He wanted you—the obedient corporate soldier—to inherit a hollowed-out shell, while he kept the real holding accounts locked behind secret offshore trusts."
Down below in the maintenance tunnels, the faint, muffled sound of shouting voices and heavy boots ricocheted up through the metal vents. Sterling and his tactical operatives were systematically searching every junction, closing in on their position with terrifying speed.
"They're coming up the secondary service ladder," Thomas said, his eyes sharpening as he reached into his tactical pack and pulled out two heavy, matte-black submachine guns, checking the magazines with practiced efficiency. "We don't have much time before they seal this entire sector."
"We can't just run forever, Thomas," Julian said, his jaw tightening into a hard, unyielding line as he gently handed the sleeping infant back to his brother. "If we keep hiding, grandfather wins by default. It's time to take the fight directly to the penthouse."

Thomas stared at his younger brother for a long, silent moment, a slow, grim smile finally breaking across his rugged, scarred face. "I was hoping you'd say that."
