Chapter 4 - Shadows at the Glass

The screech of tires tearing across the paved courtyard outside echoed sharply through the grand hall, instantly freezing every single person in motion. Through the massive floor-to-ceiling tinted glass windows, three heavy black sedans were visible, idling aggressively in the restricted drop-off zone. The tinted doors swung open in unison, and four men dressed in matching charcoal suits and dark sunglasses emerged with military-style precision, scanning the perimeter with cold, calculated efficiency.

Clara let out a terrified gasp, burying her face against the dusty fabric of her own shoulder while instinctively shielding the sleeping infant in the pink blanket.

"They found us," Clara whimpered, her small body wracked with violent shivers. "They followed us all the way from the cabin, Daddy. Please don't let them take baby Leo."

Julian’s eyes locked onto the lead man stepping out of the center vehicle—a hulking, scarred individual known too well within the darker circles of the Vance corporate security apparatus. It was Marcus, Arthur Vance’s personal enforcer, a man whose loyalty belonged solely to the patriarch and whose methods of silencing loose ends were legendary in underworld financial circles.

"Julian, what is happening out there?" Evelyn demanded, her voice rising in a shrill, hysterical octave as she grabbed his tuxedo lapel. "Why are men in tactical suits parking outside our wedding? Fix this right now, or I swear I will walk out of this church and destroy your reputation before the night is over!"

"Shut up, Evelyn," Julian snapped, shaking her hands off his chest with cold finality. He stepped past her, planting himself firmly between the altar steps and the massive glass doors.

Richard Sinclair stepped forward, adjusting his expensive silk tie with trembling fingers. "Julian, if those are corporate security assets, you need to order them off the property immediately. The press is already recording this from the balcony! Do you have any idea what the morning papers will say about a lunatic claiming you have secret children crashing your wedding?"

"Those aren't standard security assets," Julian muttered, his eyes narrowing as he watched Marcus gesture toward the side entrance of the ballroom. "That is my grandfather's personal cleanup crew. They aren't here to congratulate us."

The heavy oak doors at the back of the hall suddenly groaned as they were pushed open by two of the operatives, cutting off the whispers of the panicked guests. The heavy thud of leather-soled shoes marching in unison reverberated against the marble floor as Marcus and his men began advancing down the center aisle, parting the sea of high-society elites like a knife through silk.

"Mr. Vance," Marcus called out, his deep, gravelly voice carrying easily across the cavernous room. "The old man sends his regards. He wants the package returned immediately."

Julian stepped down from the dais, his jaw clenched so tightly that muscles throbbed along his jawline.

"Step back, Marcus," Julian warned, his voice dangerously low. "You are trespassing on private property."

"We have orders directly from the chairman," Marcus replied, taking another measured step forward while his eyes darted toward Clara and the infant. "That child does not exist in the family registry. Hand over the girl and the baby, or we clear the room by force."
